{"id":10329,"date":"2010-11-13T18:20:53","date_gmt":"2010-11-14T02:20:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=10329"},"modified":"2010-11-13T18:35:02","modified_gmt":"2010-11-14T02:35:02","slug":"secretariat-randall-wallace-2010-usa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=10329","title":{"rendered":"Secretariat (Randall Wallace, 2010):  USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?author=49\" target=\"_blank\">Kathleen Amboy<\/a>.\u00a0 Viewed at Fairview Twin, Santa Barbara, CA.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left;\" title=\"secretariat\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_GIchwvJ-aNk\/TLn9AY8kceI\/AAAAAAAAVnQ\/7v-nZMzitN4\/s800\/secretariat+film+poster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"290\" \/> The first horse to win the Triple Crown after a 25 year racing drought is\u00a0depicted with emotional detachment in\u00a0Disney Pictures&#8217; <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1028576\/\" target=\"_blank\">Secretariat<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the red and on the verge of losing her father&#8217;s horse breeding farm, Penny Chenery (Diane Lane) becomes the owner of a special colt through the single toss of a coin.\u00a0 She is convinced that this colt has the\u00a0makings of a thoroughbred champ, and hires a recommended trainer by the name of Lucien Laurin (John Malkovich), to help put her business back\u00a0in the black again.<\/p>\n<p>Chenery is also\u00a0a housewife and mother of four, who takes a hiatus from family life to focus her energy on the training of Secretariat, but against the wishes of her husband and brother, and despite the naysayers of the Jockey Club.<\/p>\n<p>Although a great plot, the film falls short and is only marginally good &#8211; not great.\u00a0 The emotion in the film fails to translate and affect the emotion of the audience &#8211; there is no attachment to any of the characters (including the horse), and neither is there a connection amongst the characters to each other.<\/p>\n<p>When Chenery encounters so many negatives, she breaks down in a fit of frustration and self-pity, yet we don&#8217;t feel empathy. \u00a0We just watch.\u00a0 After the horse loses an important race, Chenery gives her trainer and jockey a real tongue-lashing, yet we don&#8217;t feel her anger nor their disappointment.\u00a0 The dialogue does not feel genuine, it feels contrived and lacks momentum, making the actors unconvincing.<\/p>\n<p>With two strong leads such as Lane and Malkovich who do their best with what they&#8217;re given, it is baffling to try to figure out.\u00a0 There are a few redeeming elements such as light humor regarding Lucien&#8217;s clothing ensembles &#8211; loud and mismatched, but as time goes by Chenery has a tasteful effect on his choices to the point where they&#8217;re nearly wearing the same color schemes.<\/p>\n<p>Though an interesting story, this film was disappointing. \u00a0Wait for the DVD.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Kathleen Amboy.\u00a0 Viewed at Fairview Twin, Santa Barbara, CA.
