\"\" Thanks to the pressure of MJ fans, Disneyland Resort re-opened a special film attraction at the park, calling it the\u00a0Captain EO Tribute<\/em> in honor of the late Michael Jackson.<\/p>\n

At the\u00a0pinnacle of Michael Jackson’s success (after\u00a0Thriller<\/em> and before Bad),<\/em> Francis Ford Coppola in partnership with George Lucas, Disney, and Jackson created a 17 minute, 3-D film attraction for Disneyland Theme Parks titled Captain EO<\/a>. <\/em><\/p>\n

Captain EO (Michael Jackson) and his handful of bumpkin crew members are on a spaceship, with a mission to deliver a gift to the evil\u00a0Supreme Leader (Angelica Huston).\u00a0 On arrival, their plans run afoul and tick her\u00a0off, causing the crew to be turned into trash cans, but not before Captain EO, having the last word, breaks out in song and dance.<\/p>\n

The attraction was\u00a0quite popular\u00a0from 1986 up to the mid\u00a01990’s.\u00a0 It quietly disappeared in the late 1990’s due to Michael Jackson incurring an overflow of bad press.\u00a0 After Jackson’s passing in 2009, Disney\u00a0became deluged by fans demanding that Captain Eo <\/em>be reinstated at the park, which did occur in\u00a0February 2010.<\/p>\n

While the film is definitely dated, with hair and costumes straight out of the 80’s, it is a gem for fans of both Jackson and of film in general.\u00a0 Jackson was no A-list actor; with trite dialogue and corny plot this comes across loud and clear.\u00a0 He was however an outstanding performer and this comes across as well, with his song and dance performances of We Are Here to Change the World<\/em> and Another Part of Me<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The presentation is the most creative use of 3-D to date.\u00a0 As EO’s spaceship flies through narrow corridors, cool wind blows on your face and the audience\u00a0senses it visually and\u00a0physically as well.\u00a0 Hydraulic struts within the seating lift and\u00a0move in sync to the music,\u00a0and\u00a0The Supreme Leader’s tallons reach out at you as\u00a0she reaches for EO.<\/p>\n

Although the attraction does not contain the original laser display\u00a0it once had, and the\u00a0hydraulic seating\u00a0component is questionable – in fact the EO tribute replaces the\u00a0Honey I Shrunk the Audience<\/em> attraction – you get the gist of what the original\u00a0attraction once was, and it is fun to experience as-is.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately,\u00a0it seems as though Disney was not about to spend one more dime than necessary to reinstate the film, since it\u00a0has not been\u00a0updated digitally and appears scratchy, nor has the sound quality been improved.\u00a0 The hydraulic mechanism is fun and different but when it\u00a0thumps to the bass of the music it becomes a bit of an overkill.<\/p>\n

The experience is not worth the price of admission – it is however worth standing in line for.\u00a0 Perhaps if enough interest is generated, Disney will invest the dinero needed to improve the quality of the attraction.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
