{"id":1285,"date":"2008-11-10T01:04:41","date_gmt":"2008-11-10T08:04:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=1285"},"modified":"2011-06-12T15:39:42","modified_gmt":"2011-06-12T23:39:42","slug":"everlasting-moments-jan-troell-swedendenmark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=1285","title":{"rendered":"Everlasting Moments (Jan Troell, 2008): Denmark  | Finland  | Norway  | Sweden  | Germany"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/File-Everlasting_moments_poster.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-15237\" src=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/File-Everlasting_moments_poster-219x325.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"219\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/File-Everlasting_moments_poster-219x325.png 219w, https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/File-Everlasting_moments_poster.png 220w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 219px) 100vw, 219px\" \/><\/a>Reviewed by Darryl Walden. \u00a0Viewed at the AFI Film Festival, ArcLight Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p>There were no spectacular bells and whistles in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0961066\/\" target=\"_new\">Everlasting Moments<\/a><\/em>. \u00a0Nor, do I think Director Jan Troell intended such. \u00a0Rather, the film is an intelligent and sensitive expose of a family&#8217;s struggle to survive in Sweden at the turn of the twentieth century, and that country&#8217;s simplistic adjustment to modernization which is epitomized by the &#8216;Contessa,&#8217; one of the first prototypes of a portable camera that drives the theme of the film.<\/p>\n<p>The narrative evolves with Maria Larsson (Maria Heiskanen), who, in a time of financial need, \u00a0attempts to sell a &#8220;Contessa&#8217; camera \u00a0she won in a lottery just prior to her marriage with Sigge (Micheal Persbrandt), to a local photographer Sabastian Pedersen (Jesper Christensen). \u00a0Pedersen, moved by Maria&#8217;s humble demeanor and native intelligence, instead begins to instruct her on how to operate the camera. \u00a0Maria becomes intuitively adept, marveling at her own ability to capture and preserve life&#8217;s images.<\/p>\n<p>Sigge drinks and is sometimes physically abusive. \u00a0He becomes jealous of the rapport between Maria and Pedersen. \u00a0Maria nearly abandons her use of the camera, yet, it has also become a source of extra income and respect in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>The cinematography is superb. \u00a0Mike Gibisser and Susan Turman manage to capture natural lighting in order to portray an era when electricity was not commonplace. \u00a0There is a distinct art to such lighting techniques and they proved themselves worthy.<\/p>\n<p>Casting played an integral role in keeping this film together. \u00a0Maria stoically embraced a myriad of woman&#8217;s issues of her time. \u00a0If I were a Lifetime executive, this film would certainly find a place in my cable format.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Darryl Walden. \u00a0Viewed at the AFI Film Festival, ArcLight Hollywood.
