The film tells the true story about an adventurer. He has during a climbing an accident that causes him to be wedged between a rock and a cliff. Even more distressing, his arm gets stuck between the cliff and a heavy rock. This is the entire set of the film, and that is what makes it a notable film. While he is floating between hope and weariness, he is going through his life, as they are shown to the audience in flashbacks, its successes and failures and the time he spent with those he loved. His thoughts will give him strength and he makes a decision: he will survive.

This film’s focus is on how an adventurer is trying to address his painful situation hour-by-hour and day-by-day. It is a very interesting description of how strong human desire is to survive, and I was impressed in the end of how the filmmakers managed to keep us imprisoned with such a minimalist approach; with just one location and one actor.

In addition to the rocky gorge where the bulk of the film takes place, you only get a preliminary discussion of the adventurer as a person as he explores other parts of the landscape he adventures, and a series of flashbacks from his life as he tries to fight to keep his mind together. In retrospect, it must be said that it is not something you think about while you see the film. What make this film so good are all the extreme close-ups of his arm, the stone etc. There are close-ups in the straw when he’s drinking, first the little water he has left and then his own urine, which makes us even more interested and feel compassion, but we are also disgusted of how far he can go for survival.

I don’t think that this is a film that should be seen by a sensitive audience. It may contain much less blood and violence than any action – and horror movie, but there are a couple of scenes where it is very significantly and realistic blood scenes. If you are not sensitive towards blood, you should see it. I thought that this was a really good and heavy film. It is not the most easily digestible film you’ve seen and it is because it is based on a true story. There is something about films that are based on a true story that makes them so much better. James Franco makes a really strong performance as the lead role in this film and he manages to really capture the audience into the feeling of being stuck all alone in the wilderness. This is an example of a film where there is an incredible depiction of human behavior.

Reviewed by My Eklund.
