Lack of resources and overpopulation has driven the decision makers to split the population in half to obtain the highest level of efficiency out of their citizens. Half of which are awake during the day and half that are awake at night. These people are literally chipped to fall asleep the moment the sun rises or falls and to stay asleep until their “shift” is over. One morning a mother awakes to find that her daughter is missing and she goes on a quest to find her. Little does she know that even once found she will not be able to interact with her like she once could. She will be asleep in her presence and vice-versa taking the viewers feelings of what human interaction means to a whole new level. In this world there is also a disconnect from what we consider our mothers and fathers, instead of using such words they are described as “guardians” but in the end are proof that it doesn’t really matter who your guardian is or what they are called as long as you have someone that you love to interact with.

It was very touching to watch these people earning to be awake together but to fall asleep literally at the same second the other one wakes. I could not imagine the loneliness that would create as you see your loved one next to you but cannot actually talk to them or see their smile. This movie really hit on an emotional level that has not been tapped into before. What to do when the people you love are right next to you but so far away? It was sad but beautiful as they tried to make their escape from this civilization so that one day they could wake up next to each other again. Even though she was only a “guardian” we felt that she was truly just a mother that needed her daughter next to her in order to have a life worth living. It didn’t matter that the Utopian society forced her to appear with a lack of emotion toward her very own kin. She emulated the natural human desire to be with the one you love no matter what the circumstance or the consequence of that desire.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film and considered it to be one of the best shown at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Seeing the plight of humans even in the far distant future getting separated and being forced to live in a certain way. With their own desires to be together no matter what taking them on a journey of self and group discovery. Showing us the importance that human interaction and touch are at the forefront of what brings us all together and one that can never be suppressed. As well as reminding us that the bond between a mother and her daughter can never be broken no matter how large the obstacles placed in their path.

Reviewed by Katie Funk.
