{"id":1748,"date":"2008-12-20T00:46:32","date_gmt":"2008-12-20T07:46:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=1748"},"modified":"2008-12-20T08:17:12","modified_gmt":"2008-12-20T15:17:12","slug":"the-bishops-wife-henry-koster-1947-usa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=1748","title":{"rendered":"The Bishop&#8217;s Wife  (Henry Koster, 1947): USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?author=29\">Byron Potau<\/a>.\u00a0 Viewed on DVD.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.movieactors.com\/freeseframes-1026\/BishopsWife223.jpeg\" alt=\"\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left\"\/>Though, it garnered a Best Picture nomination in the weak year of 1947, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0039190\/\" target=_new>The Bishop\u2019s Wife<\/a><\/em> does not seem to have aged as well as other holiday classics.\u00a0 Yet, it is still a pleasant film if not a great one.<\/p>\n<p>Bishop Brougham (David Niven) is trying to get the new cathedral built, but he does not want to give into the demands of the project\u2019s chief financial contributor, Mrs. Hamilton (Gladys Cooper) who is making the cathedral more in the honor of someone else rather than God.\u00a0 When the Bishop prays for guidance angel Dudley (Cary Grant) shows up.\u00a0 Everyone he meets seems to light up, especially the Bishop\u2019s wife Julia (Loretta Young), much to the chagrin of the Bishop.\u00a0 As Dudley spends more time with Julia he finds himself falling for her.<\/p>\n<p>The film seems a bit run of the mill and does not have the same allure as other Christmas classics.\u00a0 David Niven is good as the Bishop, but Cary Grant does not seem to imbue his role as Dudley with his usual charm.\u00a0 Likewise, Loretta Young is sweet as Julia but nothing more.\u00a0 The film has an overall niceness about it, but one nothing especially memorable about it.\u00a0 If it\u2019s Christmas movies you\u2019re after then this is a decent one, but I doubt this will be your favorite.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Byron Potau.\u00a0 Viewed on DVD.
