{"id":18437,"date":"2012-02-09T13:17:31","date_gmt":"2012-02-09T21:17:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=18437"},"modified":"2012-02-09T13:20:31","modified_gmt":"2012-02-09T21:20:31","slug":"comparing-pina-wim-wenders-2011-germany-with-samsara-ron-fricke-2011-usa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=18437","title":{"rendered":"Comparing and Contrasting Pina (Wim Wenders, 2011): Germany with Samsara (Ron Fricke, 2011): USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?author=1634\">Tyler Rowland<\/a>.\u00a0 Viewed at Santa Barbara Film Festival 2012.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pina<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/t3.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTvCWyjz-q-P0x4SxXHlyNW306sw_y1xtoZb4JrdGdRoIQl48vKSg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"190\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Samsara<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/t0.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRZgEFnedHK3vF1MS9NcHobBGMJBdg7DEKiX2B3AZ2pKTcLJphl\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"189\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These tremendously artistic films offer an incredible blend of audible tranquility and stunning visuals.\u00a0 At first glance, these two films bear little resemblance in regards to the detail, but when simplifying the two, I find that there is more than meets the eye, or even the ear for that matter.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pina<\/em> tells the story of of the world renowned dance choreographer of that same name.\u00a0 <em>Samsara<\/em>\u00a0refers to the Tibetan term meaning &#8220;the ever-turning wheel of life&#8221;, which vaguely sums up the film.<\/p>\n<p>The film <em>Pina<\/em> had dialogue, which is needed to tell the story of the choreographer Pina.\u00a0 <em>Samsara<\/em> uses no dialogue, as it is not needed to convey the message<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Pina<\/em>\u00a0was filmed on closed sets and stages in Germany. \u00a0<em>Samsara <\/em>was filmed at a variety of locations all over the world.<\/p>\n<p>The visual interpretations work in unison with the music and these elements are is ultimately the key driving element behind any consensus.<\/p>\n<p>The music in <em>Pina <\/em>holds rigorously into the development of the film. \u00a0The score for <em>Samsara <\/em>\u00a0offers a tranquility that makes it easy to forget it is heard.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pina<\/em> is all about dance that can be appreciated on a global scale. \u00a0<em>Samsara<\/em> is all about a global scale, with a small devotion to dance.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pina<\/em> shows a devoted appreciation of a single form of art. \u00a0<em>Samsara<\/em> broadly examines many forms, but is not dedicated to a particular expression.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pina <\/em>incorporates a cast of hundreds. \u00a0<em>Samsara <\/em>\u00a0utilizes a cast well into the thousands.<\/p>\n<p>Both films delve into forces that drive people and shape culture by incorporating vivid cinematography and music to keep the senses heightened.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pina<\/em> is committed to telling one story. \u00a0<em>Samsara<\/em> commits itself to glancing at a collage of stories.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pina <\/em>explores the importance of dance as an expressive medium to those who embrace it. \u00a0Samsara examines the various expressions of a diverse range of cultures.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pina <\/em>evokes emotion by\u00a0getting personal with a small group of people. \u00a0Samsara draws affection by generalizing many groups of people.<\/p>\n<p>Pina represents a love that a small percentage of the population knows. \u00a0Samsara conjures mixed emotions that are felt by every person.<\/p>\n<p>While I thoroughly enjoyed Pina, my lack of credible dance knowledge may have held back my complete understanding of <em>Pina<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Although I have even less knowledge of many of the events in <em>SamsaraI<\/em>, my intuition leads to enjoy these rituals due to the lack of a definitive understanding.<\/p>\n<p>I am thankful that I had the opportunity to view these films and I advise any and everyone to see both of these.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Tyler Rowland.\u00a0 Viewed at Santa Barbara Film Festival 2012.
