What is reality and do I dare disrespect the great Stanley Kubrick with my foolishly candid review of A Clockwork Orange<\/em>? \u00a0After watching Stanley Kubrick\u2019s A Clockwork ORANGE<\/em>, \u00a0<\/span><\/strong>at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival 2012,\u00a0I no longer know what\u2019s real and what\u2019s not… I fell asleep during the first half of Clockwork<\/em>, and barfed during the second XD24%G half (murder, rape and Beethoven have those effects on me).<\/em>\u00a0 In volunteering for the Santa Barbara City College Film Review Field Diversion Experiment<\/span>, I have lost my mind in a socially constructed dimension dictating what the \u201cbad Sick-ILL movies are\u201d – the cancers & the heartbreaks and what the \u201cgood illnesses\u201d are – mental health distortion, gayness abnormalities (think Chris Plummer as a gay old lover in the Beginners)<\/em>, and vagrancy free crime & criminalization. \u00a0I just really really really really hope to stay saney saney saney saney saney sane for REaL\u2026.——————–>\u00a0 just LOl.NG enough to fulfill my duties today as one more film critic of Kubrick’s iconic film. \u00a0Ok well, welly welly well here goes nothing:<\/p>\n In Clockwork<\/em>, life for a group of young hooligans consists of finding thrills in petty crime and getting paid $$$ for it. \u00a0As expected, the violence in their crimes is intensified to despicable levels. \u00a0Reoccurring themes like sexual\/power dominance depicted through male and female genitalia seem to create a sense of normality as the film gets rolling.\u00a0 Props and home d\u00e9cor are shaped like large phallic symbols or rather, full flesh technicolor-enhanced penises in your face and create a very distasteful sexual ambiance to the film without arousing. \u00a0 This setting juxtaposed to the repressively pseudo-Victorian society expected to be watching on opening night, sets up a thumping of the nose to control-freaks of society and self-righteous evilngelicals through the use of young womyn\u2026 sucking on\u2026 \u00a0licking on:\u00a0 PITO<\/em>-shaped candy-cocks, peep, POPs. \u00a0 Yet what develops in film processing a negative into a positive, then, is the satirical message of positive genius Kubrick in losing our perspective through Negative imagery (force-sex-violence) of the vision of equilibrium and balance of the mind, body and State for society\u2019s good and our civic duties in a utilitarian sacrificial fashion.<\/p>\n Following a thorough purging of the soul (and stomach) set off by unexpected exposure to relentlessly offensive imagery, my mind was bombarded with questions trying to decipher Kubrick\u2019s satirical message: \u00a0Should society care for social deviants? (in the film, a young criminal, Alex, volunteers for a state rehabilitation program that starts with strapping him down to watch countless hours of violent movies, without rest, without blink)<\/em>. \u00a0 Should we spend taxpayer money in rehabilitating these \u201ccriminals\u201d or should we let JAVERT hunt them down perpetually, and can they even be rehabilitated? Does compassion come into play in the discussion or do we revolt at the thought of having compassion for a murdering rapist? \u00a0If we chose to reform without incarceration, can we offer them \u201crehabilitation and sober\u201d $AFEHOU$Es and mix them in with the social services offered to those truly sick with clinically diagnosed conditions? (NO ONE IS SAFE); and do we blindly trust the small, yet powerful group of California Arkham Asylum Doctors to fulfill their Hipocrite\u2019s Oath solely on their word where pharmaceutical profits reign.\u00a0 Conversely, do we blindly trust \u201crehabilitated hardcore criminals\u201c, (like Tookey claimed to be, may he rest in peace) to roam the streets free, having learned the prison language of the \u201cparasite eat leech\u201d world?\u00a0 What can be said of the State that experiments on its citizens to the point of dehumanization and domestication? \u00a0(I can’t shake off the image of the protagonist, Alex, on the floor in display, being kicked on and forced to lick the bottom of the sole of an enforcer’s dirty shoe).<\/em> \u00a0How far can we take this control\/insanity dichotomy before people start laughing at the Modest Proposals<\/em>?\u00a0 All these questions- my head\u2019s spinning out of control and I feel nauseous once more\u2026<\/p>\n Macabre presentation for an altruistic vision ahead of its time; now here, digitally remastered?<\/p>\n Thanks to this special screening of Kubrick\u2019s Clockwork Orange, at the 27Th<\/sup> Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival<\/span>, over a sodapop & popcorn, *THE King of Pop* (\u201cJORDAN, TYSON, JACKSON, take your pick\u201d)\u00a0 is sorely missed as Beethoven eerily takes over the night\u2026 I can officially say I too have been grotesquely enlightened as a member of degeneration X, bright enough to obscure my identity – Man or womyn, transgendered tri-sexual or figment of God\u2019s imagination in a quest for Love (the virtue).\u00a0 Happy Valentine\u2019s Day, Lonely Souls.<\/p>\n Only Father Kronos will tell in engulfing the Orange into the Apple (or the chicken over the egg, I always forget which comes first; sorry Steve Jobs, I owe you a drink).\u00a0 Time heals all wounds and orange healing over a decadent society desperate for control is longed for. \u00a0I need rest and distance for my own peace of mind and tranquility – I feel as if this film scarred me for life. \u00a0(ok that’s a little over the top, but I must say that watching the Beginners<\/em> the next day at the Festival gave me a soothing sensation and comfort, particularly after drawing some parallels and contrasts to Orange<\/em>\u00a0and the colorful Gay Pride flag). \u00a0I think I totally lost it the way I did with my last writing on FIGHT CLUB years ago; paralleling the satirical masterpiece and confusing it for inspiration of reality for all those \u201cOccupy 99%\u201d hipsters who are fed up of serving the elite in 2012.\u00a0 Maybe these civil disobedient renegades should volunteer for the state\u2019s \u201cDeviant Dispensaries Correction\u201d Program, or the \u201cGetting Bums Back To Work\u201d Program.\u00a0 After all, society should operate harmoniously and uninterrupted, and the citizens shall continue to rest their blindy blind blind trust on the altruistic state\u2019s officials with ruling experience, rather than trying to allow these hooligans to take matters into their own hands and try to seize Power and take Control, without the centuries of experience of the ruling class in truly ruly bluely ruling matters—- \u00a0I think I just barfed all over my screenplay and must make it a goal in 2012 to stop volunteering for diversion programs…<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Reviewed by Kris Mendes from the Santa Barbara Film Diversion Experiment 2012: What is reality and do I dare disrespect the great Stanley Kubrick with my foolishly candid review of A Clockwork Orange?
