{"id":22237,"date":"2012-08-26T20:29:28","date_gmt":"2012-08-27T04:29:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=22237"},"modified":"2012-09-03T06:43:31","modified_gmt":"2012-09-03T14:43:31","slug":"2016-obamas-america-dinesh-dsouzajohn-sullivan-2012-usa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=22237","title":{"rendered":"2016:  Obama&#8217;s America (Dinesh D&#8217;Souza\/John Sullivan, 2012):  USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by <a title=\"author archive\" href=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?author=49\" target=\"_blank\">Kathleen Amboy<\/a>.\u00a0 Viewed at Century 10 Downtown, Ventura, CA.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px;float: left\" src=\"https:\/\/t0.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSkkTR44pHgwEC_0iVV7xqo2g_uUk2ZYtIJk05kfdxZ7J4inb5a\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" \/>\u00a0 The national debt increased by nearly\u00a0$5 trillion in the\u00a0eight years of the Bush Administration, and disturbingly has\u00a0expanded another $5 trillion in the less than\u00a0four years of Obama&#8217;s Administration (now approaching the\u00a0$16 trillion mark), despite his\u00a0campaign promises to cut the deficit in half.\u00a0 Writer\/director\/theorist Dinesh D&#8217;Souza attempts to explain President Obama&#8217;s reckless spending in his first term, and the possible destructive consequences of a second term, if elected, in <a title=\"imdb\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2247692\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>2016:\u00a0 Obama&#8217;s America<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Running on a campaign of Hope and Change, Barack Obama&#8217;s enthusiasm seemed to sweep the nation back in 2008, but it was the hope and dreams of his father Barack Obama Sr., a staunch African Socialist and anti-colonialist, to which changes he intended to inflict on the United States.\u00a0 Instead of a collective thought on\u00a0perfecting America&#8217;s\u00a0liberty, as many believed, Obama&#8217;s intention\u00a0seemed to put in practice a type of African Socialism &#8211; if applied here, basically means share the collective wealth, deserved or undeserved,\u00a0and level the playing field at home and abroad socially, economically, and militarily &#8211; where &#8220;Americans can be taxed up to 100% of their income.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Posing the question &#8220;where will we be in 2016?&#8221;\u00a0 D&#8217;Souza takes us on a journey into Obama&#8217;s past, which spanned the globe from\u00a0India to\u00a0Kenya, to\u00a0Indonesia\u00a0and ultimately to Hawaii, proving his theory and explaining Obama&#8217;s radical choices through dialogue and chilling voice-overs culled from the voice of Obama himself\u00a0and his\u00a0memoir <em>Dreams From My Father<\/em>.<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em>Born in Mumbai, D&#8217;Souza compares and contrasts\u00a0himself\u00a0with Obama; they&#8217;re the same age, graduated in the U.S. at the same time, married the same year, but opposites in ideology, yet D&#8217;Souza was intrigued by the hysteria of &#8220;hope and change&#8221; and published a book in 2010\u00a0on his discoveries into Obama&#8217;s past, titled <em>The Roots of Obama&#8217;s Rage.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em>D&#8217;Souza&#8217;s case in point is the hero worship of Obama Sr. by Barack Jr., who held his father in high esteem based on\u00a0the info\u00a0his mother\u00a0fed him.\u00a0 Only spending one month of his entire life with his father, it wasn&#8217;t until adulthood that Jr. found out the truth about Sr. &#8211; that he was a drunkard, an abusive father and husband as well as a bigamist, and embittered and poverty stricken before his death from an auto accident in 1982.\u00a0 Discovering this, Obama Jr. fell into an emotional\u00a0tale-spin and then sought to fulfill his father&#8217;s socialistic fantasies, that the &#8220;sins of colonialism be set right, and America be downsized.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Covered also is Obama&#8217;s connection with his pastor,\u00a0the inflammatory Jeremiah Wright, his mentor the communistic writer\/activist\u00a0Frank Marshall Davis, and his association with Bill Ayers, co-founder of\u00a0the 1960&#8217;s terrorist group Weather Underground.<\/p>\n<p>This is not your typical political documentary, although it leans right, D&#8217;Souza respectfully\u00a0appeals to our intellect rather than our emotions &#8211; the antithesis of a Michael Moore film.\u00a0 He interviews younger\u00a0half-brother George Obama in Nairobi, and rather than cater to tricky editing, he chooses to include a portion where George refuses to defame his brother, even though it is evident\u00a0that George has been castigated from\u00a0the President&#8217;s inner family circle\u00a0for opposing viewpoints &#8211;
