Viewed on DVD.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johnfrizzell.com\/filmography\/jamesdean\/poster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"325\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Mark Rydell\u2019s biopic<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0240628\/\" target=_new> <em>James Dean<\/em><\/a> (2001) follows the life of 1950s Hollywood phenomenon, James Byron Dean.<span> <\/span>This made-for-TV movie peeks into the short, fast life of the iconic method actor.<span> <\/span>James Franco gives a marvelous performance as the young rebel.<span> <\/span>This is one of the most extraordinary biographic pictures I have seen.<span> <\/span>It makes for a beautiful predecessor to biopics like <em>Ray<\/em> (2004), <em>The Aviator<\/em> (2004), and <em>Walk the Line<\/em> (2005).<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">One of the great things about this film is that it is not simply a collection of Dean\u2019s filmography; it is an intimate portrayal of the personal life of one of the most famous actors in Hollywood history.<span> <\/span>We see perhaps <em>why<\/em> Dean acted out the way he did.<span> <\/span>His broken, tumultuous home life and his disastrous love affair all give insight into the insecure, enigmatic life of the Idol.<span> <\/span>While the film is admittedly speculation mixed with fact, the true focus is on portraying the actor as a human\u2014not just a legend.<span> <\/span>One of the most important aspects of that, I feel, are the developments of the relationships (or sometimes lack thereof) Dean built with his friends, family, and professional peers, which is truly captivating to watch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Franco\u2019s chemistry with Valentina Cervi as Pier Angeli, Michael Moriarity as Winton Dean, and Sam Gould as Martin Landau is entirely believable.<span> <\/span>Every performance is strong and powerful.<span> <\/span>While Cervi has little wiggle room to show off her acting abilities, she is convincing as Dean\u2019s heartbreakingly beautiful love interest. <span> <\/span>Edward Hermann\u2019s performance as Raymond Massey is classy and sophisticated.<span> <\/span>Moriarity plays a quintessential distant father figure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I have reasonable reservations about the film.<span> <\/span>It, much like Dean\u2019s life, is tragically short.<span> <\/span>I am happy to sit through a beautifully crafted three-hour long movie.<span> <\/span>There are several scenes that could have (and should have!) been expanded.<span> <\/span>I think the relationship between Dean and Christine could have been elaborated on more, as well as his friendship with Martin Landau and several other actors of the time.<span> <\/span>It\u2019s scandalous how downplayed James Dean\u2019s sexuality is in this interpretation of his life.<span> <\/span>Other than these few discrepancies, <em>James Dean<\/em> is a stunning film.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Vee Rice.
