{"id":24512,"date":"2013-02-01T19:38:32","date_gmt":"2013-02-02T03:38:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=24512"},"modified":"2013-02-02T07:50:44","modified_gmt":"2013-02-02T15:50:44","slug":"my-awkward-sexual-adventure-sean-garrity-2012-canada-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=24512","title":{"rendered":"My Awkward Sexual Adventure (Sean Garrity, 2012): Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by <a title=\"Posts by Jacob Dekker\" href=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?author=1913\">Jac<\/a><a title=\"Posts by Jacob Dekker\" href=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?author=1913\">ob Dekker<\/a>.\u00a0 Viewed at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival 2013.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.piquenewsmagazine.com\/binary\/53ab\/arts_film6.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left\"\/ width=\"325\" height=\"200\" \/>The story of My Awkward Sexual Adventure written by the star of the film, Jonas Chernick, is\u00a0exactly\u00a0as it sounds. \u00a0Canadian\u00a0filmmakers Sean Garrity and Jonas Chernick set out to make a smart and raunchy comedy and with some awards under their belt it is safe to say that they succeeded\u00a0in every sense\u00a0of the word.<\/p>\n<p>The title says it all. \u00a0This film is about an accountant&#8217;s awkward sexual adventure. \u00a0Rachel played by Sarah Manninen dumps our shy and insecure protagonist, because he is boring in bed. \u00a0One thing leads to another and Jordan finds himself stumbling into a strip club where he meets a dancer named Julia (Emily Hampshire) who, after some convincing, agrees to be Jordan&#8217;s &#8216;Sex Yoda&#8217;. \u00a0Through some cleverly written dialogue and hilarious situations Julia teaches Jordan how to be more exciting in bed.<\/p>\n<p>While this may sound like a by-the-numbers comedy it does have something genuine to offer to the genre. \u00a0The characters are all trying to overcome their own issues in a very real and believable way, and the mise-en-scene and cinematography help the characters pop out of the screen. \u00a0Similar to other independent, romantic comedies, like 500 Days of Summer (Marc Webb, 2009) or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Michael Gondry, 2004), watching these characters transform and seeing how it is reflected in the mise-en-scene is an absolute treat. \u00a0Jordan, as he starts to become more comfortable with sex, ditches the button up shirt and tie for for more colorful and casual clothes. \u00a0As Julia gets her life more\u00a0organized\u00a0her apartment and attire reflects her\u00a0transformation. \u00a0The\u00a0succinct and\u00a0rhythm\u00a0of the editing does a great job complimenting the various jokes and situations that our characters find themselves in.<\/p>\n<p>While this film does hit on a lot of the right notes, at times I did feel as though some of the jokes were forced or taken a bit too far. \u00a0There are somethings that I would have\u00a0preferred not to see, but these instances do not hurt from the overall film. \u00a0Being a romantic comedy the plot is also pretty predictable. \u00a0While the comedic value keeps it fresh and interesting, don&#8217;t expect My Awkward Sexual Adventure to stray too much from the conventions of the genre.<\/p>\n<p>With that said, this is not a film to miss. \u00a0Sean Garrity and Jonas Chernick have crafted a raunchy, laugh-out-loud \u00a0comedy that is worth the time and the money.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Jacob Dekker.\u00a0 Viewed at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival 2013.
