Viewed at the Santa Barbara Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left\" src=\"https:\/\/media.independent.com\/img\/photos\/2009\/01\/30\/lightbulb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"215\" \/>The closing night film at the SBIFF was humorous, uplifting and a biopic.\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0991174\/\" target=\"_new\"><em>Lightbulb<\/em>\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0is based on the life of local Santa Barbaran and writer of the film, Mike Cram.<\/p>\n<p>Matt is not a genius, but he is an inventor of gadgets.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>His latest gadget is a \u201clottery wristwatch\u201d that selects winning numbers for the owner.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Do you see the problem?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>It\u2019s a hair-brained idea and of course it doesn\u2019t sell.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Gina is Matt\u2019s loving and extremely patient wife, who supports him both emotionally and financially.<\/p>\n<p>Enter Sam, best friend of Matt and negative influence.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Sam is a border-line sleazy salesman type that likes to gamble.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Matt thinks nothing of asking his hard-working wife to take out a loan in order to finance his next idea, and then proceeds to gamble the money away.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>As Matt\u2019s debt soars, Gina\u2019s respect for him falters.<\/p>\n<p>There are many humorous antics between Matt and Sam, i.e. Sam spots a dog taking a crap at the dog races, he concludes that\u2019s the winning dog \u2013 since the dog will be lighter on his feet, naturally they put all of their money on the dog, and it loses.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Some of Matt\u2019s inventions are absolutely ridiculous too.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>There are problems with the T.V. viewing hat \u2013 the wearer focuses on the small screen T.V. attached to his hat and fails to see what\u2019s in front of him.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>The main problem with the remote control beer mug?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Well, when you point the remote at the T.V. the entire contents of the mug spills on your lap.<\/p>\n<p>Gina reaches her boiling point and leaves, forcing Matt to finally buckle down and get a 9\u20135er. At last Matt comes up with a bright idea, he makes a prototype, and it\u2019s a hit &#8211; the talking bottle opener! This film is well-made, coherent and quirky, with good actors to boot.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Sorry, no fan-fare on the part of the filmmaker \u2013 Jeffrey Balsmeyer (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Danny Deckchair<\/span>), just good solid continuity.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>The film stars Dallas Roberts (Matt) from <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Walk the Line (James Mangold, 2005), <\/span>Jeremy Renner (Sam) from <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Assassination of<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Jesse James (Andrew Dominik, 2007)<\/span>, and Ayelet Zurer (Gina) \u2013 you might remember her from Pete Travis\u2019 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Vantage Point (2008<\/span>).<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>The film is set in the beautiful Tucson desert.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Kathleen Amboy.
