Directed by Irishman Joel Conroy, Waveriders is the untold story of George Freeth. Half Hawaiian half Irish, Freeth was a true waterman who was responsible for starting the now phenomenon of surfing. Narrated by fellow Irishman Cillian Murphy, Waveriders is a beautiful depiction for the love for surfing.

The film pretty much jumps in on how the heroic George Freeth started the art of surfing. He was Southern California’s first real lifeguard who invented rescuing techniques we still use today. He was a man who really loved the water. Freeth is best known for when he single-handedly swam into freezing water and rescued seven Japanese fishermen who were being swept out to sea and would have eventually died in their small fishing boats. For this, he received the Carnegie Medal for Bravery and the Congressional Medal of Honor, and in addition the populace of the fishing village near Port Angeles named their town “Freeth” in his honor. Freeth tragically died at the young age of 35 due to influenza.

Being Irish and having been to Ireland I enjoyed watching all the lush greenery, rocky shorelines and especially the majestic cliffs. Having surfed only a few times, I was reluctant to see this film but was surprised by how well I liked it. The film also features some well-known professional surfers like The Malloy Brothers, Gabe Davies, the infamous Kelly Slater and more. The journey of this film takes us to the waters of Ireland, Hawaii, California and back to the one of a kind Irish swells. I love how the film is relatable to all surfers and non-surfers. I recommend this peaceful documentary to all who want to learn a little more about surfing.

Reviewed by Nicole Bacher.
