First things first. Props to this film for getting actual Beatles music to put into their film. That was a big surprise as the first song began to fill the theater. And not only did they get the rights to one Beatles song, but a few others that played throughout the movie as well. I later found out that the negotiation for the music rights was over a year and a half long and that they had to be very, very specific as to where they were going to place the music in the film.

“Beatles” was a cute film. Like a casual, coming of age, adorable little film. Within the introduction to the film there were already many Beatles comparisons of the four original bandmates, and the four boys the film is about. The movie follows four young boys as they learn about love, alcohol, and music (along with their school life and family life).

Kim, Seb, Gunnar and Ola are four best friends who all are huge fans of the Beatles. Kim, who looks an awful lot like his idol, Paul McCartney, is the main character throughout this film who is very shy and innocent to almost all things, especially girls. Seb is the talent of the group who has been gifted with playing various instruments. His father goes away a lot and often brings back the newest Beatles record for Seb which he immediately shows the boys. Gunnar is the most mature seeing as he has an older brother and that he has his own job as a delivery boy which gets him into a bit of trouble later on in the film. And little Ola is the quietest, he has a stutter, but is still one of the important members in the group.

The four boys decided to make a band to show off in front of girls and to become the next Beatles. With the help of Gunnar’s older brother, they get to somewhat experience what it would be like if they were really on stage with professional instruments but they soon learn that the rise to stardom is not as easy as they think.

“Beatles” incorporated all the cheesy aspects of growing up, such as love and how intense and insane it can be sometimes. It even dives a little deeper into how sometimes growing up is extremely difficult when you feel as if you have nothing to give. Overall I highly enjoyed the film because as light hearted and fun as it was, it also told a story of four young boys growing up during an awkward age.

“Beatles” is based off a popular Norwegian book which told a coming of age story that was universal, making it easy to transition into a film that way it could play anywhere. When casting the main actors, the director, Peter Flint, said that he took a risk with them because they had not been in films or commercials before. He worked to find the right characters and as soon as the boys read the lines, he knew right away that they were the ones for the role. Many experiences in the film that Kim had were based off of Flint’s own life such as an awkward first meeting with a girl’s father. When describing the film, Flint also said that, “humor is so essential to reach the audience. [when it is] too dark it makes you put up a defense”.

Reviewed by Rachel Donovan. Viewed at the Santa Barbara Film Festival 2015. Okay.
