Two young adults who go on an adventure outside of society to seek freedom and peace. On their journey we get to take part of the beautiful Finnish nature including a lot of coniferous forest and islands as well as their content-rich story which tends to change rapidly from time to time.

Joni and Raisa meet at a halfway house in the countryside of Finland. Joni who is a new employed, shy and lonely young man meets Raisa, a girl who by physical force is trapped in the halfway house and who gives the impression of a wild animal in the beginning. While Joni challenges with his studdering to get a closer relationship with Raisa, she sees an opportunity to escape the house with the use of Joni’s working position. One day they decide to take the car and never come back. And something that starts out as an ecstatic state of freedom turns out to have other sides to it.

Cinematographer Pietari Peltola begins the movie with beautiful close-up shots which shows off a high level of artistic skills. An effect that created curiosity without revealing too much in the beginning. He uses a lot of tracking shots where we get to follow the story from the character from behind as well as slow motion shots that creates an understanding for a certain state of mind or a feeling. He combines this with orchestra music and beautiful nature shots.

One scene that touched me was when Joni and Raisa runs past a mother with her child, a school yard with kids playing and a moped crew hanging out. I think it showed an interesting contrast between people trying to escape the reality of society and the people trying to be a part of it while they’re in the same geographical environment. How our world has been formed to a place where whether you like it or not you have to take part, how society puts us in a certain role and how much effort we have to put in in order for us to make decisions that doesn’t go along with our society structure. How we work hard and slave in order to satisfy the 1% elite that rules society, or it’s nowaday synonym: the world. Where money is used as fuel to make us keep going. The same society that has turned sticks and rocks into guns and bombs and that has made human the most dangerous animal on the planet.

Director Jukka-Pekka Valkeapää has made a story that through chocking and almost scaring moments combined with a story that takes rapid turns from challenge to challenge, keeps the audience awake and stimulated. All the way from escaping the police, to finding relatives, to finding a place to stay the night. The background behind “They have escaped” according to Mr. Valkeapää was the growing hipster/living outside of society trend that is growing in Finland and Europe in generall. He wanted to represent how they feel and highlight their spontaneous “don’t plan far ahed” mentality which is why the story changes back and forth though out.

Reviewed by Erik Johansson at Metro 4.
