{"id":35035,"date":"2016-02-22T08:21:06","date_gmt":"2016-02-22T16:21:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=35035"},"modified":"2016-03-20T03:49:01","modified_gmt":"2016-03-20T10:49:01","slug":"knight-of-cups-malick-2015-usa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=35035","title":{"rendered":"Knight of Cups (Malick, 2015): USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\">Reviewed by someone that didn&#8217;t get it.\u00a0 Viewed at the 2016 Santa Barbara Film Festival in the Arlington Theater, Sunday February 7, 8:00 PM.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bozar.be\/image\/18100\/gallery\/premiere-knight-of-cups---terrence-malick.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"325\" \/><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">When a Producer has to announce what the audience should look for, you know a film is in trouble.\u00a0 And it was.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv5731435835yui_3_16_0_1_1454862305003_55969\" dir=\"ltr\">It turns out Knight of Cups was a comedy.\u00a0 A comedy of errors that it ever got into production!\u00a0 This latest pile of steaming excrement was written and directed by Harvard undergraduate and Oxford drop-out, <em>turned AFI alumnus<\/em>, Terrance Malick.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">And in a rather odd coincidence, I found a copy of the script:<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\">KNIGHT OF CUPS &#8211;<br \/>\nBy Terrance Malick<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left\">INT. POSH HOTEL &#8211; DAY<br \/>\nRick, a self-absorbed screenwriter in his early 40s, wanders aimlessly around, looking for meaning.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left\">\n<p>Sleeps with a lot of women.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left\">EXT. BACKYARD OF REALLY EXPENSIVE HOUSE &#8211; DAY<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left\">He finds a pearl in the bottom of a pool.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\">THE END<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Analysis:<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">This movie, <em>if you call it that<\/em>, reeked of<span id=\"yiv5731435835yui_3_16_0_1_1454862305003_56092\"> unrestrained <\/span><span id=\"yiv5731435835yui_3_16_0_1_1454862305003_56092\">artistic conceit, pointless <\/span><span id=\"yiv5731435835yui_3_16_0_1_1454862305003_56092\">extravagance, <\/span><span id=\"yiv5731435835yui_3_16_0_1_1454862305003_56092\">and large smoldering piles of Hollywood money.\u00a0 <\/span>It was awful &#8212; and I want two hours of my life back!<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Yes, it was a big budget movie with some big name actors and plenty of amazing cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki, but no discernible plot and only bits and scraps of fleeting dialog that made it<span id=\"yiv5731435835yui_3_16_0_1_1454862305003_56092\"> impossible to follow.\u00a0 Now did I say that strongly enough?\u00a0 I mean, it was really, really awful.\u00a0 Minus five stars.<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">If, on the other hand, the theater laced some sort of hallucinogenic substance into the popcorn, it might help the audience buy into this <span class=\"st\">vaporous twilight.\u00a0 It might also explain Malick&#8217;s 20 year absence from film-making, contemplating his navel in the caves of Nepal, and his loose associations and addled reasoning behind this film<\/span>.\u00a0 Without serious drug abuse, there&#8217;s no way to excuse this psychotic piece of self-indulgence.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/dazedimg.dazedgroup.netdna-cdn.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1100\/8\/1108505.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"198\" \/><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv5731435835yui_3_16_0_1_1454862305003_56052\" dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">The one thing that really stood out in the theater was how deathly quiet the audience was.\u00a0 For two hours, they were reaching and straining with both ears, fearing they missed an important piece of dialogue, something that would help the movie make sense.\u00a0 And so they waited, ever so patiently, for any scrap of a story to arrive.\u00a0 Even Christian Bale confessed\u00a0he was baffled what the film was about.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">It was worse than waiting in line at D.M.V.\u00a0 And I mean a really, really long line.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">There&#8230; I feel much better now.\u00a0 But now let me tell you how I <em>really<\/em> feel.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">If Malick drops another bomb like this, it will be the end of his career.\u00a0 It was a brave but foolish attempt to render an experimental art film, but b<span id=\"yiv5731435835yui_3_16_0_1_1454862305003_56092\"><\/span><span id=\"yiv5731435835yui_3_16_0_1_1454862305003_56092\"><\/span>ig-budget art films don&#8217;t make money.\u00a0<span id=\"yiv5731435835yui_3_16_0_1_1454862305003_56092\"> <\/span>This film completely oversold the concept with a promise, a slick glossy trailer, and admittedly some really spectacular cinematography.\u00a0 But the audience came, and saw, and&#8230; left angry.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">If for some reason you are abducted and forced into seeing it, enjoy the visuals and try to accept that all that star power and gratuitous nudity can not prop up this otherwise pointless and forgettable film.\u00a0 And go easy on the popcorn.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Disclaimer: No movie-goers were actually harmed in the making of this &#8216;creative&#8217; review.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by someone that didn&#8217;t get it.\u00a0 Viewed at the 2016 Santa Barbara Film Festival in the Arlington Theater, Sunday February 7, 8:00 PM. \u00a0 When a Producer has to announce what the audience should look for, you know a film is in trouble.\u00a0 And it was.
