Korea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Wayne Derossett.\u00a0 Viewed at the 2016 Santa Barbara Film Festival, Wednesday, February 10 at 6:00:00 PM in the Metro 4 theater.<\/p>\n<p>This was the U.S. premier of <em>I Eat, Therefore I Am<\/em>.\u00a0 This film is also known by the Korean title <em>Eating Existence (2015) <\/em>or \uba39\ub294 \uc874\uc7ac (meok-neun jun-jae).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/sbiff.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/I-Eat-Therefore-I-am.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"324\" height=\"216\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Young-mi An (also known as Yeong-mi Ahn, or Young-mi Ahn) was a surprise and delight in this playful story about Yoo Yang, a young Korean woman who suddenly finds herself unemployed following an alcohol-infused faux pax while dining out with co-workers and her boss.\u00a0 The story continues to build and evolve around her need for money and sustenance as she attempts her new dream job in a career as a free-lance writer.<\/p>\n<p>The lead, Young-mi Ahn, gets her comedic timing from her background as a stand-up comedienne, and also starred in the TV show <em>Happy Together.\u00a0 <\/em>She was also a cast member of the variety show<i> Real Men.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>While food is an important story element, this is <em>not<\/em> a story about food.\u00a0 The mouth-teasing film title may bring out the foodies like moths to a flame, but this is more of a romantic comedy, with <em>food<\/em> as a lover.\u00a0 But that&#8217;s not to say there are no men in her life. <em>Au contraire!\u00a0 <\/em>She is of the &#8216;Sampo&#8217; generation, who gave up on three things; courtship, marriage, and childbirth.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hancinema.net\/photos\/photo655656.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"183\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a fun film to watch with plenty of great laughs and a brisk pacing that keeps you engaged and entertained.\u00a0 Screenplay writing credit goes to Ok-soo-dong Dal-pil (\uc625\uc218\ub3d9\ub2ec\ud544).<\/p>\n<p>The director, Lee Cheol-ha (\uc774\ucca0\ud558), comes from a background in TV commercial production and music videos.\u00a0 He trained at the Academy of Art University film school in San Fransisco.\u00a0 His credits include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i><a title=\"Love Me Not\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Love_Me_Not\">Love Me Not<\/a><\/i> (2006) &#8211; his directorial debut<\/li>\n<li><i><a title=\"Story of Wine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Story_of_Wine\">Story of Wine<\/a><\/i> (2008)<\/li>\n<li><i><a title=\"Stray Cats (film)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stray_Cats_%28film%29\">Stray Cats<\/a><\/i> (2009)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My only complaint with <em>I Eat, Therefore I Am<\/em> was a lack of contrast with some of the subtitles in the beginning.\u00a0 I found them very hard to read, and a few were too difficult to get through before the next scene arrived.\u00a0 The problem seemed to resolve itself within a few minutes as the story progressed so either they found more background contrast, or my eyes finally adapted. A drop shadow font could have remedied this problem nicely.<\/p>\n<p>Four stars.\u00a0 I am eagerly awaiting a theatrical or DVD release of <em>I Eat, Therefore I Am<\/em> so that my other friends can enjoy it, and I&#8217;ll be looking for the bright Young-mi An in future films.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Wayne Derossett.\u00a0 Viewed at the 2016 Santa Barbara Film Festival, Wednesday, February 10 at 6:00:00 PM in the Metro 4 theater.
