{"id":35362,"date":"2016-02-22T22:12:00","date_gmt":"2016-02-23T06:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=35362"},"modified":"2016-03-01T09:07:07","modified_gmt":"2016-03-01T17:07:07","slug":"the-wait-lattesa-messina-2015-italy-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=35362","title":{"rendered":"The Wait \/ L&#8217;attesa (Messina, 2015): Italy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Wayne Derossett.\u00a0 Viewed at the 2016 Santa Barbara Film Festival in the Fiesta Theater, Monday, Feb 8 at 2:40 PM.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cinemaldito.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Lattesa-rec.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"163\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The wonderfully talented Juliette Binoche stars in a deceitful tale of a mother visited by her son&#8217;s jilted girlfriend, who comes to rekindle a broken romance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Screen-Shot-2016-02-22-at-10.10.10-PM.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-36255\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-36255\" src=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Screen-Shot-2016-02-22-at-10.10.10-PM-325x226.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-02-22 at 10.10.10 PM\" width=\"322\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Screen-Shot-2016-02-22-at-10.10.10-PM-325x226.png 325w, https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Screen-Shot-2016-02-22-at-10.10.10-PM.png 618w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 322px) 100vw, 322px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Binoche, born in Paris of French and Polish descent, is best known for her roles in <em>The Unbearable Lightness of Being<\/em> (1988) and <em>The English Patient<\/em> (1996) winning an Oscar and a BAFTA award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.\u00a0 She also starred in <em>Chocolat <\/em>(2<em>000) <\/em>with Johnny Depp.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com\/736x\/0c\/4f\/5c\/0c4f5c3b3adb40ee022c18f06fef7e46.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"324\" height=\"243\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In <em>The Wait<\/em>, she bides her time and gets to know her son&#8217;s fianc\u00e9e, all the time waiting to tell her son&#8217;s girlfriend some bad news.\u00a0 And when she finally does, it takes us down a painful path that takes the story a new direction.<\/p>\n<p>It is through her reluctance that we learn about her loss, but the story later reveals it to be something else.\u00a0 Something that was an artful deception of the audience as we explore the depths of her emotions.<\/p>\n<p>The story pacing was slow and deliberate.\u00a0 The cinematography; superb.\u00a0 It builds the story upon Italian architecture and beautiful green landscapes and thoughtful interior scenes.<\/p>\n<p>I found this movie totally enjoyable, and the imagery took me to places I didn&#8217;t know I wanted to go.\u00a0 I want to see it again just for the visuals.\u00a0 It was so evocative, it made me into a better writer.<\/p>\n<p>The director and writer, Piero Messina is relatively uncredited.\u00a0 He previously directed a <span class=\"year_column\">2013 <\/span> TV Series documentary, <em>Masterpieces Unveiled<\/em> (Italy) and a few shorts in Italy, Netherlands and France.\u00a0 His directorial performance in <em>The Wait<\/em> should immediately catapult him into much greater films.<\/p>\n<p>Cinematography credit goes Francesco Di Giacomo, known for his work on The First Beautiful Thing (2010), The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) Hannibal (2001), and U-571 (2000).<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Wayne Derossett.\u00a0 Viewed at the 2016 Santa Barbara Film Festival in the Fiesta Theater, Monday, Feb 8 at 2:40 PM.
