{"id":40841,"date":"2018-02-12T15:00:56","date_gmt":"2018-02-12T23:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=40841"},"modified":"2018-02-12T16:22:49","modified_gmt":"2018-02-13T00:22:49","slug":"the-public-emilio-estevez-2018-usa-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=40841","title":{"rendered":"The Public (Emilio Estevez, 2018): USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span id=\"p497\">Review by\u00a0<span id=\"517\">Rasmus<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"518\">Nilsson<\/span>.<\/span><span id=\"p760\">\u00a0Viewed at the Arlington Theater, 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ramascreen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/The-Public-e1512605730113.jpg\" width=\"325\" height=\"178\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left\"\/ \/><span id=\"p499\">Emilio\u00a0<span id=\"520\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Estevez<\/span>&#8216;s\u00a0<span id=\"532\">film<\/span>\u00a0&#8220;The Public&#8221;\u00a0<span id=\"570\">had<\/span>\u00a0the honor of being Santa Barbara Film Festivals&#8217; opening\u00a0<span id=\"533\">film<\/span>\u00a0shown at the Arlington\u00a0Theater.<\/span><span id=\"p500\">\u00a0The\u00a0<span id=\"534\">film<\/span>\u00a0is about a group of homeless people living in Cincinnati occupying a\u00a0<span id=\"571\">public<\/span>\u00a0library trying to survive an unusual\u00a0<span id=\"572\">cold<\/span>\u00a0winter.<\/span><span id=\"p501\">\u00a0The Public, just like the rest of the famous directors\u00a0<span id=\"535\">films<\/span>,\u00a0<span id=\"573\">discusses<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"566\">a lot of<\/span>\u00a0challenging issues.<\/span><span id=\"p502\">\u00a0During it&#8217;s 2 hours run time the\u00a0<span id=\"536\">film<\/span>\u00a0manages to\u00a0<span id=\"574\">discuss<\/span>\u00a0a number of topics humorously and without becoming stale.<\/span><span id=\"p503\">\u00a0These topics include:<\/span><span id=\"p504\">\u00a0homelessness, importance of books, freedom of information, mental health, fake news, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"p505\">The cast is filled with stars\u00a0<span id=\"567\">such as<\/span>\u00a0Alec Baldwin, Christian Slater, Michael\u00a0<span id=\"522\" class=\"s-rg-t\">K.<\/span>\u00a0Williams, Gabrielle Union and of course\u00a0Emilio\u00a0<span id=\"523\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Estevez<\/span>\u00a0himself who is\u00a0<span id=\"575\">playing<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<span id=\"583\">protagonist<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"p508\">The movie takes place on location in a\u00a0<span id=\"576\">public<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"542\">library<\/span>\u00a0that during business hours acts as a home for the\u00a0<span id=\"539\">homeless<\/span>.<\/span><span id=\"p509\">\u00a0We follow\u00a0Stuart\u00a0<span id=\"525\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Goodson<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"p507\">(Emilio\u00a0<span id=\"524\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Estevez<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0who is a librarian that has a very\u00a0<span id=\"577\">good<\/span>\u00a0relationship with the\u00a0<span id=\"540\">homeless<\/span>\u00a0patrons at the\u00a0<span id=\"543\">library<\/span>.<\/span><span id=\"p510\">\u00a0One afternoon when the\u00a0temperature\u00a0is predicted to drop to a record low, the\u00a0<span id=\"541\">homeless<\/span>\u00a0decide to &#8220;occupy&#8221; the\u00a0<span id=\"544\">library by barricading the the doors<\/span>\u00a0in order to survive the night. Mr.\u00a0<span id=\"527\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Goodson<\/span>\u00a0gets caught in the middle between the\u00a0patrons and the police led by\u00a0Detective Bill Ramstead\u00a0<span id=\"p506\">(Alec Baldwin) and is forced to find a solution.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"p511\">In a\u00a0<span id=\"528\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Q&amp;A<\/span>\u00a0after the\u00a0<span id=\"551\">movie<\/span>\u00a0Emilio\u00a0<span id=\"529\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Estevez<\/span>\u00a0talked about the process of making the\u00a0<span id=\"552\">movie<\/span>.<\/span><span id=\"p512\">\u00a0<span id=\"557\">He<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"568\">said\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"561-568\">that<\/span><span id=\"568\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"558-568\">he<\/span><span id=\"568\">\u00a0originally wrote the script 11 years<\/span>\u00a0ago and\u00a0<span id=\"562\">that<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"559\">he<\/span>\u00a0had slowly been\u00a0<span id=\"579\">improving<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"545\">it<\/span>\u00a0along the way\u00a0<span id=\"580\">waiting<\/span>\u00a0for the\u00a0<span id=\"578\">right<\/span>\u00a0moment to\u00a0<span id=\"546\">make it<\/span>.<\/span><span id=\"p513\">\u00a0The filmmaker also said that\u00a0<span id=\"560\">he<\/span>\u00a0worked many homeless people during the\u00a0<span id=\"553\">movie<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<span id=\"581\">give<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"547\">it<\/span>\u00a0authenticity.<\/span><span id=\"p514\">\u00a0When asked if the\u00a0<span id=\"554\">movie<\/span>\u00a0was shot\u00a0<span id=\"563\">digitally<\/span>\u00a0or with\u00a0<span id=\"537\">film<\/span>\u00a0Mr.\u00a0<span id=\"530\" class=\"s-rg-t\">Estevez<\/span>\u00a0answered that\u00a0<span id=\"548\">it<\/span>\u00a0was\u00a0<span id=\"538\">film<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"564\">digitally<\/span>\u00a0but in post-production they used a static filter to help tell the story by\u00a0<span id=\"582\">giving<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"549\">it<\/span>\u00a0more intimacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"p759\">Even though a lot of the topics were discussed very lightheartedly I thought the movie depicted the problems well and I strongly recommend it to everyone.<\/span><span id=\"p516\">\u00a0Even to those who watch\u00a0<span id=\"556\">movies<\/span>\u00a0solely for entertainment and typically are not interested in movies discussing social problems.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Review by\u00a0Rasmus\u00a0Nilsson.\u00a0Viewed at the Arlington Theater, 2018.
