Alex, the Local theater owner, Taryn the concessions girl, Escott security guard

Charges – False imprisonment and lackluster filmmaking

February 7, 2018 the local theater falsely imprisoned Alex’s internet date for the evening, Miss Zoe, forcing her to participate in what is popularly known as a “locked room” mystery. Miss Zoe, as captured on CCTV security cameras was seen attempting to escape via the front doors and tried all of them. Clearly distressed, she made a barely-readable sign with the letters HELP on it.

Taryn, the concessions girl, and Escott the security guard were actively aware of the plan and co-conspired with Alex, the theater owner, to detain her. Miss Zoe escaped through the front door of the theater as soon as it was unlocked.

Miss Zoe was so disturbed by these events, she went to complain to the Local Police Department after barely sleeping the evening before. She devoted herself to her work and tried to forget the events. When said defendants Taryn and Alex came to her place of work to appeal to her emotions, she began a relationship with Alex.

The court is not persuaded by Zoe’s pleas to stop this prosecution based on her beginning a relationship with the perpetrator, Alex, or becoming friends with the co-conspirators. Love does not conquer all. Love is not an excuse for illegal activity. False imprisonment is not a joke and the court considers crimes against women to be of particular concern because of ongoing rape culture which fails to take into account the well-being of women. Even a first date can include domestic abuse.

Criminal acts are not a joke. Pointblank, the perpetrators took advantage of Miss Zoe’s loneliness and penchant for poor choices. The court’s action against conspiring parties should serve as a wakeup call to find a relationship where she is treated with respect, and as a warning to others who might think false imprisonment is a good ruse for a first date. Locked room events are only fun when all parties actively give their consent to participate. And while Miss Zoe participated once she was stuck there, she did not give consent prior to the event beginning. And her subsequent relationship with Alex can only be viewed as Stockholm Syndrome.

The court sentences Alex to counseling and Alex, Taryn, and Escott to 20 hours of community service.
As for the actual film, One Last Night, it had a few charms, but the editing could have cut out a lot of scenes that dragged a bit. The acting could have been tighter and needed additional rehearsal prior to shooting. Brian Baumgartner as the security guard is a known character actor from The Office, unfortunately, even his scenes drag. The actors have a few other important credits, but leaving footage from this film off a sizzle reel is probably a good idea since there is no sizzle to be found here. It just doesn’t really hold together as a cohesive whole since the entertaining moments are too few and few between.

And in terms of plot points, the film Zoe did not report the act to the police. Had she thought to call the police to report being locked in, it would have been the end of the film. Had she broken through the door, she would have been justified.

Reviewed by Diana Diaz. Viewed at the Metro 4 Theater.
