But Potter went further than that by not only making a comedy but a dramatic comedy, which might sound paradoxical and unbelievable but ends up being totally coherent in the genres she uses.

The whole movie is about contrast, it is obviously shown by being a black & white movie. But not only: When we start the movie, we’re expecting a classic movie, happening in the past because it’s black & white. Then we see Janet (Kristin Scott Thomas) using her smartphone, we think maybe Potter is using anachronism in the movie. But after that when we get to know the characters, we totally get that it’s not happening in the past. Indeed, there’s a lesbian couple who’s about to have babies and a woman who’s about to become a minister.

Potter is breaking classical patterns throughout the whole movie. For example, when Tom (Cillian Murphy) takes Cocaïne in the bathroom, the close-ups are bringing a stressful atmosphere, but also, we can all agree that not every conventional dinner has guest taking drugs.

April (Patricia Clarkson) also breaks the conventional atmosphere with her sarcasm, constantly arguing with Gottfried (Bruno Ganz), who’s the total opposite of her, a nice and peaceful man.

It’s hard to not spoil the movie, so I would just say, by breaking patterns and mixing humor and drama together, Potter has created a hilarious and brilliant movie. For those who thought Black & White movies were boring, watch The Party, and you will reconsider your opinion.

Reviewed by Margaux Pfau. Viewed at the Santa Barbara Film Festival 2018.
