Viewed on DVD<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.homevideos.com\/movies-covers\/marathonman.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"207\" height=\"268\" \/> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0074860\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Marathon Man<\/em><\/a> is an exciting quasi-political, espionage thriller that deals with stolen diamonds, evil henchmen, ruthless covert operatives, and one sadistic Nazi dentist on the lam.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas \u201cBabe\u201d Levy (Dustin Hoffman) is a grad student at Columbia who helps out and befriends a foreign student. \u00a0When the two eventually become lovers, big brother \u201cDoc\u201d (Roy Scheider) appears on the scene and informs Babe that his girlfriend is a phony, which suspiciously scares her off. \u00a0\u00a0Shortly thereafter, Doc, near death and bleeding profusely from the effects of a nifty wrist shank stuck in him, stumbles into Babe\u2019s apartment and dies on his floor. \u00a0Enter the Division agent and Doc\u2019s friend Peter Janeway (William Devane), who proceeds to enlighten Babe about the truth of Doc\u2019s profession and the search for smuggled diamonds. \u00a0Babe is then abducted from his apartment, dragged into a warehouse, tied up to a chair, and asked repeatedly \u201cis it safe?\u201d \u00a0Facing the threat of dental torture and puzzled by the circumstances, Babe\u2019s reply is \u201cyes it\u2019s safe, it\u2019s very very safe.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0Dr. Christian Szell (performed deliciously to the hilt by Sir Laurence Olivier) is a greedy and paranoid former Nazi dentist. \u00a0Szell has come to the States to collect the precious stones that were responsible for his brother\u2019s untimely death, and he sadistically wants to know \u201cis it safe?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0After a bit of cat and mouse chases, near hit and misses, Babe reconnects with his lover, but much to his chagrin, he realizes his brother was correct in his assessment of her. \u00a0\u00a0There is a climactic show-down between Babe and Szell much to the audience\u2019s delight.<\/p>\n<p>The film is well-paced from beginning to end with a nice tidy script which is exempt from any\u00a0unnecessary dialogue.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Kathleen Amboy.
