The canvas is then painted over with black until it is completely covered in darkness. A white box is drawn on the canvas, no place in particular, inside the box is a black figure, expressionless, curled up. The painting is crude, as if made quickly, bearing the innocence of a child’s work. Beneath it, words write, black man in white jungle. written in white in one of the corners, it reads black artist. Below it, a white box is painted, within that box, the words “white writer” are written in black. Two figures are drawn in the middle; they dominate the space, one is an outline in white, the eyes are empty, two filled in circles, all white, the hair is crazy, they look like dreads. The other is painted in white, filled in; this one has black eyes and glasses, and each one bears a small crown. In an open space on the canvas, it says art critics love drugs, drugs kill artists. Surrounding the figures are a few circles with four lines sticking out. There are other circles with beaks and two legs. A list below them that reads 1. Leach 2. Fleas 3. Bacteria. These are all then crossed out. The white figure is now covered in black paint, hiding any semblance of a figure; the black figure is painted into white. A big cross is drawn through the painting, covering anything in its path. In big letters, it reads, “black martyr”. In another space, there are the words free system. Overlapping this as if forced between the words is “me”. Drawn in the space of the figure that was blacked out is a small figure with an upside-down crown for a head. Below this is written dead innocence, which is eventually crossed out. There are waves drawn on a canvas, nothing complicated, a line that dips and points, and there are a few rows of this. The word seascape is written, the first s and a are crossed out, and the word escape remains. Painting over the waves are skyscrapers. To finish this painting, there is a culmination of words and phrases taken from art critics, “primal art”, “black”, “exploiting”, and “exploited”. Lastly, the figure that remains is covered in black paint; most of the painting is painted over as well. All that remains are words and phrases, along with some drawings of skyscrapers. At the bottom of the corner, there is a signature samo with an upside-down crown under it and a copyright c.

This was my favorite film of the festival, directed by Julian Schnabel, starring Jeffrey Wright as Jean-Michel Basquiat. I may be biased because Basquiat is my favorite artist; however, no one makes artistic films like Julian Schnabel, just like no one paints like Basquiat.

Reviewed By Nico Kalin, Viewed at SBIFF.
