Viewed on DVD.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.listal.com\/image\/productsus\/1000\/B00000K3TN\/movies\/immortal-beloved.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left\" width=\"200\" height=\"325\" \/>There is a sub-genre to the traditional\u00a0musical and it is the composer bio-pic such as Charles Vidor&#8217;s A Song To Remember (1945) or more recently Milos Forman&#8217;s Amadeus (1984).\u00a0 These films do not\u00a0employ\u00a0singing and dancing to draw an audience into the story, but rely heavily on the composer&#8217;s music to affect the audience&#8217;s emotions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since not all musicals are created equal there are some that have fallen in the cracks of film history.\u00a0 <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0110116\/\" target=_new>Immortal Beloved<\/a><\/em> is one such film.\u00a0 \u00a0It is however a moving portrait of the life of Ludwig Van Beethoven set entirely\u00a0to his music, with Gary Oldman bringing to life\u00a0this enigmatic genius.<\/p>\n<p>Many will remember Oldman from the highly over-rated\u00a0Christopher Nolan Batman films or the equally commercial Harry Potter films, but it is Oldman&#8217;s sensitive interpretation which makes this film so\u00a0unique, yet under-rated.<\/p>\n<p>Upon Beethoven&#8217;s death a note was discovered in his personal papers addressed to his &#8220;immortal beloved.&#8221;\u00a0 The plot of the film involves Beethoven&#8217;s friend and personal secretary Anton Schindler\u00a0 played by Jeroen Krabbe, who sets out on a quest to discover the composer&#8217;s true love.\u00a0 There were several women involved\u00a0in Beethoven&#8217;s life, one of which is Countess Erdody portrayed by Isabella Rossellini, who brings her own special warmth to the role.<\/p>\n<p>According to the film Beethoven suffered an abusive father, he cared for his younger siblings, and was subjected to cruelty.\u00a0 He was hard of hearing at a young age, which eventually\u00a0led to deafness,\u00a0and like all geniuses was grossly misunderstood.<\/p>\n<p>There are many flashbacks as Beethoven is described from various character&#8217;s perspective.\u00a0 The finale of the\u00a0film is equally \u00a0triumphant and heartbreaking,\u00a0and\u00a0appropriately edited to the piece Ode To Joy that&#8217;s not to be missed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Immortal Beloved was meticulously written and directed by Bernard Rose and\u00a0released ten years after the enormous popularity of Amadeus, yet somehow was overlooked and forgotten.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Kathleen Amboy.
