{"id":5253,"date":"2009-10-02T16:34:37","date_gmt":"2009-10-03T00:34:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=5253"},"modified":"2009-10-02T19:10:48","modified_gmt":"2009-10-03T03:10:48","slug":"julie-and-julia-nora-ephron-2009-usa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=5253","title":{"rendered":"Julie and Julia (Nora Ephron, 2009):  USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by <a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?author=49\">Kathleen Amboy<\/a>.\u00a0 Viewed at the Fairview Twin.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.reelmovienews.com\/images\/gallery\/julia--julia-movie-poster.png\" alt=\"Julie and Julia\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left\" width=\"174\" height=\"260\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What happens when you saute and slow cook\u00a0cubed beef\u00a0with bouillon?\u00a0 It eventually becomes beef stew.\u00a0 When you add 3 cups of red wine and follow Julia Child&#8217;s recipe, it deliciously becomes Boeuf Bourguignon!<\/p>\n<p>In 2002 Julie Powell committed 1 year of her life to try all 524 recipes from Julia Child&#8217;s Mastering the Art of French Cooking cookbook (published in 1961).\u00a0 Julie was a frustrated writer but a huge fan of Julia Child\u00a0when she began her endeavor; she used the power of the internet and a personal blog as a means for artistic release, and also to document her culinary journey.\u00a0 In 2005 Julie&#8217;s memoirs of this event was then published\u00a0under the title Julie and Julia:\u00a0 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Nora Ephron took Julie Powell&#8217;s memoirs and merged them with Julia Child&#8217;s autobiography My Life in France, and thus created the plot for\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1135503\/\" target=_new>Julie &amp; Julia<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/em>Julie &amp; Julia begins with a flashback of \u00a0Julia Child (Meryl Streep)\u00a0in France with her husband Paul Child\u00a0(Stanley Tucci).\u00a0 She has a lot of free time and very little to do.\u00a0 Julia first\u00a0sets about attending cooking classes geared for G.I.&#8217;s,\u00a0 she then becomes acquainted with 2 French women working on a cookbook, and eventually\u00a0all 3 become cohorts in creating a French\u00a0cookbook designed with simplicity in mind\u00a0for\u00a0American wives.<\/p>\n<p>Simultaneously Julie Powell (Amy Adams), in the present, is attempting the recipes and reporting the outcome on her blog.\u00a0 As the blog gains in popularity Julie Powell&#8217;s story becomes newsworthy, and her ego expands as her marriage is jeopardized.<\/p>\n<p>Ephron, best known for Sleepless in Seattle (1993) and You&#8217;ve Got Mail (1998), took great liberties\u00a0in writing, as\u00a0the dialogue\u00a0coupled with Streep&#8217;s over-the-top voice and character interpretation made Julia appear as though she were an airhead at times.\u00a0 The Julia Child that I grew up watching and ended up serving many years later at a local country club always appeared intelligent and unpretentious.<\/p>\n<p>That being said, Julie &amp; Julia is a really good romantic comedy, and a lot of fun to watch.\u00a0 Meryl Streep really has improved with age &#8211; she has lost the self-consciousness in her acting, which never attracted me before.\u00a0 I believe she will be nominated for her role as Julia Child, and deservedly so.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Kathleen Amboy.\u00a0 Viewed at the Fairview Twin.
