Viewed at the Mann&#8217;s Chinese Theater as part of the 2009 AFI Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/festival.sundance.org\/page\/-\/2009\/filmguide\/stills\/large\/NFLUN.jpg\" alt=\"Lunchfilms\" width=\"325\" height=\"180\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left\"\/>Producer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0686652\/\" target=_new><em>Mike Plante<\/em><\/a> brings us an assortment of misfit shorts in his movie <a href=\"http:\/\/festival.sundance.org\/2009\/film_events\/films\/lunchfilms\" target=_new>Lunch Films<\/a>.\u00a0 He took several \u201cstarving\u201d filmmakers out to lunch, and had them pay him back what they owed him with a film.\u00a0 Being that he gave no clear requirements or parameters, he got quite a random collection.\u00a0 A few of the films are short stories or situations, while some seem like they have no meaning or plot, others are just weird art and crazy sounds and images.<\/p>\n<p>The film I most enjoyed was called <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Letters Real\/Names Not<\/span>, directed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0414337\/\" target=_new>Azazel Jacobs<\/a>.\u00a0 It followed the day in the life of a middle-aged woman.\u00a0 It began with a shot of her writing an email to her daughter\u2019s boyfriend, while we here a voice over of what\u2019s being typed.\u00a0 We continue to her voice-overs of this email conversation, and meanwhile watch shots of the woman going through her day\u2019s activities.\u00a0 I felt this was a unique and interesting way of story telling.<\/p>\n<p>A few of the films seemed as though they were actual home videos.\u00a0 One following a mother as she readies her children for bed is endearing in its realness.\u00a0 Each shot is very close up making it easy to read the woman\u2019s emotions and see her pain.<\/p>\n<p>The more experimental shorts were difficult to understand, but visually intriguing.\u00a0 Ranging from moving collage images to creepy claymation, these confusing clips only add to the chaos.\u00a0 Which may just be the point of Lunch Films.\u00a0 These movies aren\u2019t supposed to fit together to create one cohesive unit.\u00a0 By giving the audience an eclectic jumble to choose from, they can decide what interests them.\u00a0 This was a great way to get a lot of struggling filmmakers names out there.\u00a0 Now that you\u2019ve seen what they can do maybe you\u2019ll go searching for more.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Lava Farmer.
