{"id":6325,"date":"2009-11-11T21:36:59","date_gmt":"2009-11-12T05:36:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=6325"},"modified":"2009-11-11T22:06:39","modified_gmt":"2009-11-12T06:06:39","slug":"disneys-a-christmas-carol-robert-zemeckis-2009-u-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=6325","title":{"rendered":"Disney&#8217;s A Christmas Carol (Robert Zemeckis, 2009): U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?author=49\">Kathleen Amboy<\/a>.\u00a0 Viewed at Camino Real Cinemas, Goleta.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.movieweb.com\/img\/7\/b\/h\/PH9sVdehakc7bh_m.jpg\" alt=\"christmas carol\" width=\"220\" height=\"325\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left\"\/>Disney has released yet another version of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1067106\/\" target=_new>A Christmas Carol<\/a><\/em>, this time involving Performance Capture 3-D.\u00a0 Performance Capture is just that, a technology that captures the actor&#8217;s movements, likeness, and performance for digital animation.<\/p>\n<p>The film closely follows the Charles Dicken&#8217;s tale of the miserable and greedy\u00a0Ebenezer Scrooge, and the apparition of the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future.<\/p>\n<p>Scrooge (Jim Carrey)\u00a0has no Christmas spirit, but is heartless and stingy.\u00a0 He makes his assistant Bob Cratchit (Gary Oldman) work for pittance in a sub-zero office in the dead of winter.\u00a0 He rejects his nephew&#8217;s friendly invitation to a holiday meal, because it&#8217;s a waste of his precious time to be with losers that make meager incomes.<\/p>\n<p>On Christmas Eve, Scrooge is visited by each ghost, first by the Past &#8211; to reveal his selfish choices that lead him to the\u00a0Present &#8211; who shows Scrooge how much warmth and love he is missing out on, and finally the Future &#8211; invokes an epiphany on Scrooge when he is shown his tombstone without any mourners.<\/p>\n<p>The film contains a stellar cast of stars beginning with Jim Carrey who out-performs the role of Scrooge and the 3 ghosts.\u00a0 Followed by Gary Oldman (in 3 roles), Colin Firth, Robin Wright Penn, Bob Hoskins, and Cary Elwes.\u00a0 These are Performance Capture roles as opposed to voice-over animation.<\/p>\n<p>Since this\u00a0is in 3-D, there are many extended scenes for that purpose alone &#8211; Scrooge is chased throughout the town by the death coach.\u00a0 This is one of my favorite stories and I felt it lagged a bit (potential snoozability) \u00a0in order to get the point across about Scrooge, but other than that I found it entertaining.<\/p>\n<p>This film was made to appeal to a mature audience, but if you\u00a0kick in the extra bucks (for 3-D)\u00a0the younger kids will be distracted enough &#8211; I get it.\u00a0 There are some frightening scenes though,\u00a0that I would not recommend for children under 7\u00a0 years.\u00a0 Rather Mickey&#8217;s Christmas Carol (Disney, 1983) is highly entertaining for young and old alike.\u00a0 There are several\u00a0remakes of this classic tale, but one superb version that I highly recommend is the 1951 A Christmas Carol (alternately titled Scrooge) with Alastair Sim, directed by Brian Desmond Hurst<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Kathleen Amboy.\u00a0 Viewed at Camino Real Cinemas, Goleta.
