{"id":6655,"date":"2010-01-08T20:53:40","date_gmt":"2010-01-09T04:53:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=6655"},"modified":"2010-01-08T23:34:00","modified_gmt":"2010-01-09T07:34:00","slug":"avatar-james-cameron-2009-usa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=6655","title":{"rendered":"Avatar (James Cameron, 2009): USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?author=49\">Kathleen Amboy<\/a>.\u00a0 Viewed at the Harkins Arizona Mills in\u00a0Tempe, AZ.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/a.images.blip.tv\/Danayoung1346-JamesCameronsAvatar584-505.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"292\" height=\"240\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left\"\/>James Cameron has managed to pull\u00a0another rabbit out of\u00a0his hat for us, with\u00a0his latest\u00a0hit, the action packed\u00a0Sci-Fi \u00a0flick \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0499549\/\" target=_new><em>Avatar in 3-D<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 Not only was the film ten years in the making, but its creator wrote, directed, produced, and co-developed the special 3-D Fusion Camera System\u00a0(2 high-def cameras in a single\u00a0camera body)\u00a0that was used in the\u00a0filming process.<\/p>\n<p>The film stars Sam Worthington as Jake Sully,\u00a0a paraplegic marine who has been offered a second chance at life.\u00a0 Jake is\u00a0summoned to take over his deceased twin\u00a0brother&#8217;s, humanoid\u00a0Na&#8217;vi\u00a0hybrid (an avatar), in order to pursue work already in progress on the moon Pandora.<\/p>\n<p>When Jake is connected to his avatar and\u00a0induced into sleep mode, he has a new body with full use of his arms and legs.\u00a0 Although employed by the RDA Corporation which is bent on destroying Pandora, policing of the moon is conducted by the Marines.\u00a0 Jake is then\u00a0enticed by Colonel Quaritch (Stephen Lang)\u00a0to spy on the indigenous population (the Na&#8217;vi), and\u00a0report back his findings\u00a0in exchange for an operation which will bring back the full use of his real\u00a0legs.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) is a scientist in charge of the avatar project, and\u00a0is not convinced Jake is capable or competent to fill his brother&#8217;s shoes.\u00a0 Grace discovers Jake is spying for the Colonel, and her only recourse is to convince Jake that the Na&#8217;vi are endangered.\u00a0\u00a0Admiration and respect for the Na&#8217;vi grows, until Jake falls in love with one, and is then\u00a0convinced he must do whatever it takes to save the species and their land from destruction.<\/p>\n<p>Avatar is full of exciting action sequences filmed in performance capture animation which gives the film its life &#8211; the Pandora moon is breath taking.\u00a0 While the 3-D moments are fun, I&#8217;m convinced the medium is strictly a money-making device, and not part of the artistic process.\u00a0 Perhaps the film industry needs to produce a film which\u00a0incorporates 3-D into the plot of the film.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While admittedly a Sigourney Weaver fan and slightly biased, I found her character blah and not worthy of her acting talent.\u00a0 Sam Worthington\u00a0is superb as Jake Sully, whose personality blossoms in the avatar body.\u00a0 Overall a highly enjoyable film, but not worthy of the extra 3-D bucks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Kathleen Amboy.\u00a0 Viewed at the Harkins Arizona Mills in\u00a0Tempe, AZ.
