{"id":6716,"date":"2010-01-15T21:20:36","date_gmt":"2010-01-16T05:20:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=6716"},"modified":"2010-01-16T00:03:55","modified_gmt":"2010-01-16T08:03:55","slug":"the-400-blows-francois-truffaut-1959-france","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=6716","title":{"rendered":"The 400 Blows (Francois Truffaut, 1959):  France"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?author=49\">Kathleen Amboy<\/a>.\u00a0 Viewed on Turner Classic Movies.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hddb.net\/ecs_covers\/the-400-blows-blu-ray-11986-large.jpg\" alt=\"The 400 Blows\"style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Les Quatre Cents Coups or <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0053198\/\">The 400 Blows<\/a> <\/em>refers to boys raising hell in their youth.\u00a0 It is a\u00a0simple yet sensitive film about a boy named Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Leaud), in his early teens, who is drastically misunderstood by both his parents and teachers.<\/p>\n<p>Antoine&#8217;s academic potential is criminally overlooked, as he is instead reprimanded severely by his teacher for acting up in class.\u00a0 He and his friend Rene then seize the opportunity to skip school on several occassions\u00a0seeking amusement park rides\u00a0or the cinema.<\/p>\n<p>Antoine lives in a small flat with his mother and stepfather.\u00a0 Money is tight, and Antoine must sleep in a tiny nook just off of the kitchen, on a small cot with a sleeping bag.<\/p>\n<p>His irresponsible parents that spend large chunks of time away from home and their son, expect a lot from Antoine, who is surprisingly not a very demanding child.\u00a0 His mother is\u00a0frigid and uncaring, until Antoine catches her with another man besides his father, and suddenly she begins to show interest in her son, even to the point of bribery.<\/p>\n<p>In an attempt to make easy money (and probably a cry for attention), Antoine steals a typewriter from his father&#8217;s office, fails to pawn it, returns it and then gets busted.\u00a0 Subsequently, \u00a0in a confusing attempt to teach Antoine a lesson, his parents request that he be placed in a detention center, but close to the ocean since he has never seen it before.<\/p>\n<p>Jean-Pierre Leaud exudes a\u00a0desperate loneliness from his character Antoine, who just wants to break free from his bleak surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>The 400 Blows is the first in a string of\u00a0films that Leaud would appear in for Francois Truffaut, and loosely based on the filmmaker&#8217;s youth.\u00a0 Overcoming his difficult and depressing childhood, Truffaut dropped out of school and\u00a0after many\u00a0 trials and tribulations went on to become first a film critic and then a renowned filmmaker.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Kathleen Amboy.\u00a0 Viewed on Turner Classic Movies.
