{"id":6830,"date":"2010-02-08T14:02:33","date_gmt":"2010-02-08T22:02:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=6830"},"modified":"2010-02-08T14:07:58","modified_gmt":"2010-02-08T22:07:58","slug":"fathers-and-guns-emile-gaudreault-2009-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=6830","title":{"rendered":"Fathers and Guns (Emile Gaudreault, 2009): Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?author=49\">Kathleen Amboy<\/a>.\u00a0 Viewed at Metro 4, Santa Barbara International Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.variety.com\/graphics\/photos\/_storypics\/fathers_guns.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"315\" height=\"190\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left\"\/>De Pere En Flic or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1258134\/\" target=_new><em>Fathers and Guns<\/em><\/a>, is a refreshingly funny film about a father\/son\u00a0undercover\u00a0team in the middle of a sting\u00a0operation.\u00a0 When one of their own is taken hostage, dad Jacques Laroche (Michel Cote) accuses his son Marc (Louis-Jose Houde), a sharpshooter at the range,\u00a0of being spineless and too slow on the draw.\u00a0 After having his best friend taken before his eyes, Marc is\u00a0bumped down to a desk job for his bumbling ways, thanks to his dad&#8217;s request.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Charles Berube (Remy Girard), a high-profile defense attorney is having problems of his own.\u00a0 Charles successfully defends a group of motorcycle thugs (who hold the cop hostage), and\u00a0thanks to his neglect,\u00a0his son is suicidal, while\u00a0Charles himself is having problems with his conscience &#8211; he talks in his sleep, revealing privileged information.<\/p>\n<p>In a last ditch effort to salvage his relationship with his son, Charles and his son (Patrick Drolet)\u00a0sign up for a father\/son wilderness retreat, complete with therapist as nature guide.\u00a0 Since Charles&#8217; home is tapped,\u00a0it seems the obvious\u00a0next step\u00a0is to send\u00a0an undercover\u00a0\u00a0father\/son team to the retreat &#8211; enter Jacques and Marc, who can&#8217;t agree on anything.<\/p>\n<p>Antics ensue as each\u00a0pair of fathers and sons must participate in every exercise in the program, once it&#8217;s mud wrestling, while another is when the group must pick from a basket of dolls, describing how that particular doll represents his father (or son) &#8211; Marc chooses an Arabian clothed doll because he believes\u00a0his dad is a member of the Taliban.<\/p>\n<p>This film made heads turn last summer when it became an instant hit and the\u00a0second highest grossing film\u00a0in Quebec, ever!\u00a0 Sony has bought the rights for a remake, while\u00a0Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall are set to develop and produce it.<\/p>\n<p>Most notable is the artwork in the title sequence, very clever upbeat and snappy.\u00a0 Small silhouettes animate the plot of the film during the opening credits, grabbing the audience&#8217;s attention early on.\u00a0 While this technique\u00a0has been\u00a0used before,\u00a0it is highly\u00a0amusing and worth focusing on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Kathleen Amboy.\u00a0 Viewed at Metro 4, Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
