{"id":6906,"date":"2010-02-09T13:18:20","date_gmt":"2010-02-09T21:18:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=6906"},"modified":"2010-02-09T15:30:21","modified_gmt":"2010-02-09T23:30:21","slug":"aliens-of-the-deep-james-cameron-2005-usa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=6906","title":{"rendered":"Aliens of the Deep (James Cameron, 2005): USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?author=49\">Kathleen Amboy<\/a>.\u00a0 Viewed at the Arlington, Santa Barbara Film Fest.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.parentpreviews.com\/legacy-pics\/aliens_of_the_deep.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"240\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left\"\/>\u00a0 As a Special Event, the SBIFF hosts &#8220;Field Trip to the Movies&#8221; where 5th and 6th graders from local schools are invited to attend a special\u00a0film\u00a0screening.\u00a0 This year&#8217;s screening\u00a0was James Cameron&#8217;s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0417415\/\" target=_new>Aliens of the Deep<\/a><\/em> in 3D.<\/p>\n<p>In 2005 Cameron joined both NASA scientists and marine biologists to study a chain of mountains below the ocean&#8217;s surface known as the Mid-Ocean Ridge.\u00a0 The theory being, that in order to progress the study of water on other planets (or moons), we must continually research the oceans on our planet first.<\/p>\n<p>There are creatures in the deep sea that do not rely on photosynthesis to exist,\u00a0but rather thrive in and around\u00a0hydrothermal vents, which constantly\u00a0emit\u00a0smokey-black hot water.\u00a0 Near this volcanic activity, a highly complex community of organisms are continually at work.\u00a0 Among many unidentified creatures, there are giant tube worms, crab, shrimp and jellyfish.<\/p>\n<p>After the screening, James Cameron appeared on stage with Dijanna Figueroa, one of the biologists from the film.\u00a0 They both discussed their interest in ocean studies, and their love of planet earth.\u00a0 They encouraged the school children to let their imagination lead them into various fields of scientific study and to care for their own\u00a0envirnoment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0After the discussion period, both Cameron and Figueroa graciously answered many of the children&#8217;s questions.\u00a0 Cameron also screened a short portion of his\u00a02009 blockbuster hit Avatar to the kids, in order\u00a0to show them just\u00a0how many of the imaginary creatures on Pandora were taken from real creatures of the deep sea.<\/p>\n<p>James Cameron is to be applauded for gifting the local children with his time and talent as an influential director.\u00a0 Aliens of the Deep was a productive use of 3-D, which captured the attention of many school children which might not otherwise have an interest in viewing an underwater documentary.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Kathleen Amboy.\u00a0 Viewed at the Arlington, Santa Barbara Film Fest. \u00a0 As a Special Event, the SBIFF hosts &#8220;Field Trip to the Movies&#8221; where 5th and 6th graders from local schools are invited to attend a special\u00a0film\u00a0screening.\u00a0 This year&#8217;s screening\u00a0was James Cameron&#8217;s Aliens of the Deep in 3D.
