M. Pei considers before beginning any new\u00a0project &#8211; space, light, and movement.\u00a0 <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1516559\/\" target=\"_blank\">Learning from Light:\u00a0 The Vision of I. M. Pei<\/a><\/em>\u00a0is a documentary which follows Pei&#8217;s commissioned work on the Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar.<\/p>\n<p>Pei is a fan of geometric shapes,\u00a0which is how\u00a0he attempts to describe in simple layman&#8217;s terms, the construction of the museum &#8211; an ordered set of geometric shapes.<\/p>\n<p>When Pei accepts any commission, he begins his work\u00a0by conducting thorough research into the culture for which he is building.\u00a0 It is Pei&#8217;s understanding that\u00a0the Western world knows very little of Islamic art, and so the structure would need to incorporate openness and natural light in order to draw interest inward.<\/p>\n<p>The goliath structure sits regally alone on a small man-made type\u00a0peninsula, drawing in the sun&#8217;s rays and reflecting its beauty in the calm water that surrounds it.<\/p>\n<p>At 92, Pei confesses that the Museum of Islamic Art should be his last commission,\u00a0 he feels compelled to retire now that his work is complete.\u00a0 Anyone who has been to the Louvre in Paris (or seen photos of it) will know the iconic\u00a0Pei\u00a0 from his signature glass and steel pyramids erected in the mid 1980&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>While the music (Yo-Yo Ma) and filmwork are highly captivating to the senses, there is a recurring and slightly\u00a0annoying VO narration\u00a0throughout, that makes one feel as though they were watching something straight out of the Travel Channel &#8211; no wonder, the film was produced in association with Qatar Museums Authority.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Kathleen Amboy.\u00a0 Viewed at Victoria Hall, Santa Barbara Film Fest. \u00a0 There are\u00a0 three elements that famed architect I.
