Viewed at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, in the Metro IV Theater.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/guides.news.com.au\/movies\/media\/x350\/257431_254467_bnd_mn_bnd4696_1_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rum-ba bum bum bum bum bum bum HEY!<\/p>\n<p>At the Santa Barbara Festival<\/p>\n<p>This jaunty Austrie musical<\/p>\n<p>Was perhaps the funnest one of all<\/p>\n<p>Hardly art, but still a ball!<\/p>\n<p>With such sad films that make you cry<\/p>\n<p>Some so dark, you wanna die<\/p>\n<p>Cheer up, buddy, come on by<\/p>\n<p>And please give <a href=\"\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1148165\/\" target=_new>Bran Neu Dae<\/a> a try!<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s nothing I would rather do<\/p>\n<p>Than to give films like this one a view<\/p>\n<p>A silly, song-filled bright journey<\/p>\n<p>About the Austrie Aborigini<\/p>\n<p>So sure, I wouldn\u2019t call it \u2018good\u2019<\/p>\n<p>But the point that must be understood<\/p>\n<p>Is to not take this film as serious<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t try, you\u2019ll be delirious<\/p>\n<p>Enjoyable, it\u2019s just good fun<\/p>\n<p>It shines far brighter than the sun!<\/p>\n<p>With colors abundant and music galore<\/p>\n<p>No one could care that the plot was quite poor<\/p>\n<p>A token romance and plot holes for sure<\/p>\n<p>But with a zany cast that\u2019s never a bore<\/p>\n<p>With a heart that\u2019s just so strong and pure<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll take you on a magical tour<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019ll rock your socks to your very core<\/p>\n<p>Make you hungry, always wanting more!<\/p>\n<p>Dum dad um doo deed ah doo day!<\/p>\n<p>It starts with a young boy named Willie<\/p>\n<p>Who\u2019s as loveable as can be<\/p>\n<p>Simple and free, the boy assumes<\/p>\n<p>His life belongs in the ports of Broome<\/p>\n<p>Born and raised in this joyous place<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s enchanted by a pretty face<\/p>\n<p>His bonnie lass, who sings real well<\/p>\n<p>When they\u2019re together, he feels real swell!<\/p>\n<p>But his momma sends him off to Perth<\/p>\n<p>In hopes of a catholic rebirth<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s schooled at the mission by a priest<\/p>\n<p>Who\u2019s crazy as hell, to say the least!<\/p>\n<p>Played by Geoffrey Rush, the priest\u2019s a hoot<\/p>\n<p>Constant comic gold, you\u2019ll love that coot!<\/p>\n<p>But the boy gets sick of his brimstone ways<\/p>\n<p>Decides he can no longer stay<\/p>\n<p>Leaves the mission, goes on a long quest<\/p>\n<p>To find the girl he loves the best<\/p>\n<p>He befriends some hippies and a bum<\/p>\n<p>Sing songs that you will surely hum<\/p>\n<p>Travelin\u2019 together, they are quite the team<\/p>\n<p>Twists and turns throughout their scheme<\/p>\n<p>To bring Willie back to his girl and home<\/p>\n<p>No matter how far they must roam<\/p>\n<p>They face a horny fat old hag<\/p>\n<p>Hide the weed they got in their bag<\/p>\n<p>But with crazy priest hot on their tail<\/p>\n<p>Willie must reach Broome, he cannot fail<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s goal is set, and soon he sees<\/p>\n<p>His roots as an Aborigine<\/p>\n<p>(Bring in background choir)<\/p>\n<p>In a climax full of crazy luck<\/p>\n<p>Where nonsense plot twists run amuck<\/p>\n<p>The crowd was cheerin, laughin\u2019 loud<\/p>\n<p>Director Rachel Perkins should be proud!<\/p>\n<p>And as the credits started rolling<\/p>\n<p>There was no crying or consoling<\/p>\n<p>Only joy, laughter, and mirth,<\/p>\n<p>For we realized this film\u2019s true worth,<\/p>\n<p>While the truly good films are much deeper<\/p>\n<p>I promise you, this one\u2019s a keeper<\/p>\n<p>(Epic orchestral accompaniment)<\/p>\n<p>As important as it may be<\/p>\n<p>To be moved by films of higher degree<\/p>\n<p>Profound themes that make you see<\/p>\n<p>The truths of life that set you free<\/p>\n<p>In spite of that, you must agree<\/p>\n<p>That once in a while, occasionally<\/p>\n<p>All one needs is a little glee<\/p>\n<p>A chance to oh-so-briefly flee<\/p>\n<p>To a simpler world of felicity<\/p>\n<p>If that\u2019s your wish, I guarantee<\/p>\n<p>Bran Neu Dae is the key<\/p>\n<p>To a bouncy, catchy laughing spree!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Mathew Roscoe.
