{"id":7255,"date":"2010-02-15T18:09:38","date_gmt":"2010-02-16T02:09:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=7255"},"modified":"2010-02-15T19:07:54","modified_gmt":"2010-02-16T03:07:54","slug":"god-went-surfing-with-the-devil-alexander-klein-2010-usa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=7255","title":{"rendered":"God Went Surfing with the Devil (Alexander Klein, 2010): USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?author=49\">Kathleen Amboy<\/a>.\u00a0 Viewed at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.godwentsurfing.com\/public\/images\/overview.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"233\" height=\"318\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left\"\/>\u00a0 What is the easiest way to make friends with Palestinians, if you are an Israeli living near the Gaza Strip?\u00a0 If you&#8217;re cool, you share your surfboard.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1326223\/\" target=\"_blank\">God Went Surfing with the Devil<\/a><\/em>\u00a0is a documentary which chronicles an effort by Israeli surfer Arthur Rashkovan and American surfer Matt Olsen to share\u00a0surfboards with Arab-Israelis, especially those living in the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n<p>Rashkovan is a co-founder of Surfing 4 Peace, a grass-roots\u00a0organization that attempts\u00a0to bridge the\u00a0political and religious gap between neighbors who share a common love of surfing.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007 news circulated within the Israeli surf community, that there were a group of Palestinian surfers in Gaza that shared battered old surfboards, purchased prior to\u00a0Gaza&#8217;s boarders being sealed off.\u00a0 That same year, Israeli and American surfers were able to get a dozen boards into Gaza, for their Palestinian surf bros.<\/p>\n<p>In 2008 Olsen, an American who was raised part-time in Israel, brought with him 23 boards and surf gear, determined to deliver everything himself.\u00a0 Filmmaker Klein and a crew of 3, followed Olsen&#8217;s attempts to first get the gear through customs, then delivered to his address in Israel, and finally into Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>After weeks of waiting just for the boards to arrive, Olsen then had to secure permission to enter Gaza.\u00a0 He makes connections and is finally permitted to enter, but without the boards &#8211; the Israeli government views the boards as a possible hostile weapon.\u00a0 He did however manage to\u00a0smuggle in rash guards, wax and boardshorts.<\/p>\n<p>Included in the small cast is Mofeed, a pre-teen Arab-Israeli, who is being mentored by his brother-in-law Abedullah, in the fine art of surfing and staying out of trouble.\u00a0 There are a group of these young kids that just want to surf all day.<\/p>\n<p>When Olsen, Klein and the rest of the crew are\u00a0held for questioning by Hamas, the cameraman\u00a0secretly leaves his camera\u00a0rolling for all of us to witness in anticipation.\u00a0 After giving this likable group of guys the third degree, they\u00a0are actually given an apology by their detainer and invited out to dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Highly entertaining, with beautiful surf shots that\u00a0blend well\u00a0with the beauty of these goodwill ambassadors who\u00a0bring an important message to the surfing community as well as to\u00a0the rest of us &#8211; when you share similar interests, the differences seem minute.<\/p>\n<p>In the film, Rashkovan wears a shirt that states &#8220;God will surf with the Devil, if the waves are good.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Kathleen Amboy.\u00a0 Viewed at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. \u00a0 What is the easiest way to make friends with Palestinians, if you are an Israeli living near the Gaza Strip?\u00a0 If you&#8217;re cool, you share your surfboard.
