{"id":7300,"date":"2010-02-16T20:20:09","date_gmt":"2010-02-17T04:20:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=7300"},"modified":"2010-02-16T22:44:04","modified_gmt":"2010-02-17T06:44:04","slug":"180-south-chris-malloy-2010-usa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=7300","title":{"rendered":"180 South (Chris Malloy, 2010): USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?author=49\">Kathleen Amboy<\/a>.\u00a0 Viewed at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/ecx.images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/51uaSlkHMgL._SL500_AA240_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left\"\/>\u00a0 In 1968\u00a0Yvon\u00a0Chouinard,\u00a0founder of outfitting store Patagonia\u00a0in Ventura, CA\u00a0followed his\u00a0buddy\u00a0Doug Tompkins on a quest\u00a0to the Patagonia mountains in South America.\u00a0 Both Chouinard and Tompkins (founder of The North Face\u00a0gear)\u00a0loaded up their\u00a0bus with surfboards and climbing gear\u00a0and drove the 5,000 miles down to Chile.<\/p>\n<p>In 2005 filmmaker Chris Malloy\u00a0travelled to Patagonia with Chouinard\u00a0and set about making plans\u00a0to\u00a0film down there. <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1407927\/\" target=\"_blank\">180 South<\/a><\/em>\u00a0 follows fellow climber and surfer Jeff Johnson, on his quest to repeat Yvon and Doug&#8217;s\u00a0journey down to Chile, but this time\u00a0by boat.<\/p>\n<p>Filming started in 2007 which finds Johnson trying to catch up to a\u00a0friend&#8217;s boat somewhere off the coast of Mexico.\u00a0 Johnson first experiences a bout with\u00a0seasickness,\u00a0and later\u00a0the\u00a0boat loses its main mast and becomes shipwrecked off\u00a0 Easter Island.\u00a0 There the crew which includes another Malloy brother, is able to repair the damage and take on another fellow surfer named Makohe, a female Rapa Nui native.\u00a0 Eventually they meet up with Tompkins and Chouinard, and also\u00a0Timmy O&#8217;Neill a record-breaking climbing expert.<\/p>\n<p>Tompkins and Chouinard, both environmentalist, have spent a great deal of their time and resources trying to protect the Patagonia wilderness.\u00a0 Through Tompkins&#8217; efforts, 200,000 acres of forested land in Chile have ballooned to over 2 million acres of protected land known as Corcovado National Park.\u00a0 This is the area we find our crew attempting to climb.<\/p>\n<p>Malloy paces his film in a slow methodical manner, almost meditative and hypnotic.\u00a0 He captures the beauty of the rugged terrain along with the beckoning of the waves &#8211; where Johnson takes the longest ride of his life.\u00a0 For those that enjoy a surf\u00a0doc with a meaningful sub-plot, this film does not disappoint.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Kathleen Amboy.\u00a0 Viewed at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. \u00a0 In 1968\u00a0Yvon\u00a0Chouinard,\u00a0founder of outfitting store Patagonia\u00a0in Ventura, CA\u00a0followed his\u00a0buddy\u00a0Doug Tompkins on a quest\u00a0to the Patagonia mountains in South America.\u00a0 Both Chouinard and Tompkins (founder of The North Face\u00a0gear)\u00a0loaded up their\u00a0bus with surfboards and climbing gear\u00a0and drove the 5,000 miles down to Chile.
