{"id":8630,"date":"2010-02-27T14:02:42","date_gmt":"2010-02-27T22:02:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=8630"},"modified":"2010-02-27T14:32:17","modified_gmt":"2010-02-27T22:32:17","slug":"libeled-lady-jack-conway-1936-usa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=8630","title":{"rendered":"Libeled Lady (Jack Conway, 1936): USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?author=49\">Kathleen Amboy<\/a>.\u00a0 Viewed on Turner Classic Movies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"null\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.haircuttingfun.com\/images\/libeled_lady-m.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"242\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left\"\/><\/a>\u00a0 When the New York Evening Star prints an article\u00a0that\u00a0wealthy Connie Allenbury (Myna Loy) is a home-wrecker, she emerges as the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0027884\/\" target=\"_blank\">Libeled Lady<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and sues the paper for five million dollars.\u00a0 Since the staggering amount is enough to\u00a0shut the paper\u00a0down\u00a0for good, frantic chief editor Warren Haggerty (Spencer Tracy) rehires suave Bill Chandler (William Powell) to set up and\u00a0defame the famous heiress.<\/p>\n<p>Enter Gladys Benton (Jean Harlow) the feisty fiancee of Haggerty,\u00a0both\u00a0have been engaged for an interminable amount of time.\u00a0 Haggerty is a workaholic and nuptials are only\u00a0a distraction from his work.\u00a0 Gladys becomes the third party in this false love triangle,\u00a0she agrees to marry Bill in order to entrap Connie, and is promised a final wedding date by Warren if the plot succeeds.<\/p>\n<p>After securing a fishing trip with Connie and her dad J. B.
