{"id":9145,"date":"2010-05-04T22:47:06","date_gmt":"2010-05-05T06:47:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=9145"},"modified":"2010-11-13T18:29:00","modified_gmt":"2010-11-14T02:29:00","slug":"the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly-sergio-leone-1966-italy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=9145","title":{"rendered":"The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (Sergio Leone, 1966): Italy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?author=49\">Kathleen Amboy<\/a>.\u00a0 Viewed at the TCM Film Festival in Hollywood, CA.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px;float: left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.collegerecruiter.com\/mt-static\/plugins\/ImageUp\/uploaded\/933494379557093the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" \/>Sergio Leone&#8217;s third installment of his <em>Dollars Trilogy<\/em>, is a cross-genre of satirical Western, epic war film, and just about\u00a0the best buddy\u00a0picture ever made.\u00a0 <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0060196\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Good, the Bad and the Ugly<\/a><\/em>\u00a0 is a grand masterpiece in storytelling.<\/p>\n<p>Three gunslingers paths intertwine on their quest for buried Confederate gold.\u00a0 Tuco &#8220;the Ugly&#8221; (Eli Wallach) is a bandit, wanted in several states for murder, robbery, perjury, bigamy, kidnapping, extortion, and worst of all, using marked cards.\u00a0 Angel Eyes &#8220;the Bad&#8221; (Lee Van Cleef) is a gun for hire outlaw, and Blondie &#8220;the Good&#8221; (Clint Eastwood)\u00a0is a bounty hunter.<\/p>\n<p>Blondie captures Tuco, collects the bounty, and then rescues him just as he&#8217;s about to be hung.\u00a0 They split the bounty and repeat their performance in another\u00a0town, until one instance in which\u00a0Blondie&#8217;s aim is not so good.\u00a0 Tuco is enraged and\u00a0hollers at \u00a0him &#8220;when that rope starts to pull tight, you can feel the devil bite your ass.&#8221;\u00a0 Becoming weary of Tuco&#8217;s mouth, Blondie abandons him in the desert.\u00a0 The two play cat and mouse through the entire film, but manage to stick together.<\/p>\n<p>Angel Eyes has been paid $500 by Baker (Livio Lorenzon)\u00a0to find, interrogate, and kill Stevens.\u00a0 Once he finds him, Stevens (Antonio Casas)\u00a0then offers Angel Eyes $1000 to double-cross and kill Baker.\u00a0 Angel Eyes takes all of the money and kills them\u00a0both, telling his victims &#8220;when I&#8217;m paid, I always see the job through.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The three guns\u00a0become entangled throughout the picture, and wind up in a showdown that is staged\u00a0somewhat\u00a0similar to a bullfight.<\/p>\n<p>Leone&#8217;s unique stylized\u00a0filming involves slow, methodical pacing, extreme close-ups, and wide-angle long shots all blended with facetious dialogue and\u00a0Ennio Morricone&#8217;s haunting Andalusian soundtrack.<\/p>\n<p>Eli Wallach steals every scene he is in.\u00a0 With his over the top reactions and facial gestures, the eye cannot help but focus on him.\u00a0 Tuco is a once in a lifetime role which Wallach plays to the hilt.\u00a0 He is given humorous, unforgettable dialogue, which rolls from his tongue with ease.<\/p>\n<p>The spry 94 year old Wallach, who\u00a0was in attendance to introduce the film with Robert Osborne,\u00a0brought along a birthday card someone had sent\u00a0him, and upon opening it everyone could hear &#8220;na na na na na, waa waa waa&#8221; &#8211; it was\u00a0Morricone&#8217;s familiar tune.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Kathleen Amboy.\u00a0 Viewed at the TCM Film Festival in Hollywood, CA.
