{"id":9372,"date":"2010-06-26T16:20:37","date_gmt":"2010-06-27T00:20:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=9372"},"modified":"2010-06-26T19:18:50","modified_gmt":"2010-06-27T03:18:50","slug":"north-face-philipp-stolzl-2008-germany","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=9372","title":{"rendered":"North Face (Philipp Stolzl, 2008): Germany"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?author=49\">Kathleen Amboy<\/a>.\u00a0 Viewed on Netflix.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mountaineeringmuseum.org\/images\/north%20face%20movie%20poster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"325\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left\"\/>\u00a0 In 1936 Nazi Germany, the propaganda machine\u00a0attempted to push two of its own soldiers and experienced\u00a0climbers to\u00a0summit the \u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0844457\/\" target=\"_blank\">North Face<\/a><\/em>\u00a0of the Eiger in the Swiss Alps, ahead of competing Austrian climbers Edi Rainer (Georg Friedrich) and Willy Angerer (Simon Schwarz).<\/p>\n<p>In a competition to reach the summit first, Toni Kurz (Benno Furmann) and Andreas Hinterstoisser (Florian Lukas), set\u00a0out for the climb, but are\u00a0not fully prepared.\u00a0 Luise (Johanna Wokalek), Toni&#8217;s love interest, is a novice newspaper woman being mentored by her cynical boss\u00a0Henry Arau (Ulrich Tukur).<\/p>\n<p>As a rainstorm passes,\u00a0the night\u00a0sky clears\u00a0and the\u00a0German team\u00a0start out ill-prepared,\u00a0minus their\u00a0crampons and with a limited supply of roping.\u00a0 To their annoyance, the Austrians soon follow and begin taunting them.\u00a0 One of the Austrian climbers is injured just as a shift in the weather occurs bringing a snowstorm.\u00a0 Toni and Andi have the choice of\u00a0continuing their ascent or helping the Austrians get down the mountain safely.<\/p>\n<p>Making the moral choice to help their fellow climbers all hell breaks loose, as the storm worsens a\u00a0leg is broken, gloves are lost, an arm is frozen solid, and frostbite sets in.\u00a0 The climbers attempt to retrace their steps, but alas they run out of rope!\u00a0 Meanwhile down at the base, Luise is watching their harrowing descent from an observation deck and making a moral choice of her own, whether to cover the story for headlines (and possibly further her career),\u00a0or seek help for her friends up on the mountain. \u00a0Henry encourages her to go for the story!<\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0great stunts, and terrific\u00a0cinematography, North Face is as\u00a0thrilling as 1997&#8217;s <em>Into Thin Air\u00a0<\/em> and\u00a0is based on a true story as well.\u00a0 Though the\u00a0film portrays the German team as being apolitical\u00a0with\u00a0the Nazi\u00a0theme practically nil, it\u00a0would have\u00a0given the plot more depth if the filmmakers had developed this aspect a bit more, but overall it&#8217;s a great film.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Kathleen Amboy.\u00a0 Viewed on Netflix. \u00a0 In 1936 Nazi Germany, the propaganda machine\u00a0attempted to push two of its own soldiers and experienced\u00a0climbers to\u00a0summit the \u00a0North Face\u00a0of the Eiger in the Swiss Alps, ahead of competing Austrian climbers Edi Rainer (Georg Friedrich) and Willy Angerer (Simon Schwarz).
