{"id":9401,"date":"2010-06-27T15:13:46","date_gmt":"2010-06-27T23:13:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=9401"},"modified":"2010-06-27T20:18:03","modified_gmt":"2010-06-28T04:18:03","slug":"hello-lonesome-adam-reid-2010-usa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=9401","title":{"rendered":"Hello Lonesome (Adam Reid, 2010): USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?author=49\">Kathleen Amboy<\/a>.\u00a0 Viewed at the Regal Cinemas, Los Angeles Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/filmguide.lafilmfest.com\/tixSYS\/2010\/templates\/images\/filmstills\/1002.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"200\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left\"\/>\u00a0 Writer\/director Adam Reid\u00a0produces an observation\u00a0of loneliness in his first feature length film <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1258201\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hello Lonesome<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In the first of three vignettes, Bill (Harry Chase) is a relatively successful and\u00a0extremely\u00a0selfish\u00a0VO actor.\u00a0 His current wife has just left him and his adult daughter\u00a0ignores his obnoxious but\u00a0contrite phone calls.\u00a0 His only friend appears to be Omar (Kamel Boutros)\u00a0the delivery man.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor (Lynn Cohen) is still mourning the death of her husband from the previous year.\u00a0 After a fender-bender she\u00a0 looses her right to drive and has to rely on her divorced and homely\u00a0, next-door\u00a0neighbor Gary (James Urbaniak) to get around town.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon and Debby (Nate Smith and Sabrina Lloyd) meet on-line, and they soon\u00a0have a casual sexual relationship, until Debby discovers she has cancer and Gordon has a revelation that\u00a0he loves her.<\/p>\n<p>Through brief\u00a0moments of humor\u00a0(not laugh out loud), each character\u00a0study unravels.\u00a0 Bill accidentally locks himself into his soundproof room, until Omar bails him out, announcing &#8220;I have a package for you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor and Gary, opposites in every way, end up sharing the same bed.\u00a0 While Gordon and Debby work through their issues of insecurity, dependency on television and on-line gambling, and finally health and life.<\/p>\n<p>The title sequence is clever, quirky, and economical,\u00a0displaying a suburban\u00a0neighborhood, but\u00a0in miniature form with catchy upbeat music.\u00a0 Because of this, the elements of humor are slightly off-kilter and a bit of a let down.\u00a0 The humor is not quite\u00a0funny enough, while the reflective moments are\u00a0far from\u00a0meaningful.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When Debby succumbs to cancer, Smith portrays Gordon, with the same\u00a0impersonal enthusiasm as his casual sexual experience.\u00a0 Likewise, Bill a shooting enthusiast, wields his gun in\u00a0maniacal fashion,\u00a0invoking in the audience an\u00a0apprehension of wondering if he will off himself\u00a0 at any given moment.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s unpredictable but not interesting.\u00a0 Depressing in content,\u00a0and due to\u00a0the fact that the\u00a0characters are so bland yet\u00a0needy, the audience is left with\u00a0a feeling that we could care less what happens to any of the characters.<\/p>\n<p>Since every character seems to be the archetypal loner, the plot line might have been stretched a bit more\u00a0had Reid taken an atypical loner, a character study of one who is constantly surrounded by others, yet experiences the same empty feelings of loneliness.<\/p>\n<p>The cast of <em>Hello Lonesome<\/em>\u00a0was awarded the Best Ensemble Performance in the Narrative Competition at LAFF.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Kathleen Amboy.\u00a0 Viewed at the Regal Cinemas, Los Angeles Film Festival. \u00a0 Writer\/director Adam Reid\u00a0produces an observation\u00a0of loneliness in his first feature length film Hello Lonesome.
