Renaud, 2010): USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?author=49\">Kathleen Amboy<\/a>.\u00a0 Viewed at the Metro 4, Santa Barbara, CA.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_ot4nEdy31dY\/S1v2Hee5fRI\/AAAAAAAAA0A\/cVOyBULtfq0\/s320\/Despicable+Me.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"231\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left\"\/>\u00a0 In an otherwise normal neighborhood, lives the cantankerous supervillain Gru (Steve Carell),\u00a0who&#8217;s been\u00a0upstaged by his punk nemesis Vector (Jason Segel),\u00a0who recently\u00a0heisted the\u00a0Great Pyramid.\u00a0 Gru sets his sights much\u00a0higher and\u00a0shoots for the Moon in Universal\u00a0Pictures&#8217;\u00a0 <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1323594\/\" target=\"_blank\">Despicable Me<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Seeking a loan from the Bank of Evil to bankroll his Moon heist, Gru is told he must first secure a shrink ray machine.\u00a0 He succeeds in stealing one, only to have it stolen by Vector, who lives in a modern but\u00a0luxurious\u00a0fortress nearby.<\/p>\n<p>When Gru spots\u00a0three orphan girls selling cookies door to door he hatches a plan to adopt the girls and use them as bait\u00a0to\u00a0get inside (the cookie-loving)\u00a0Vector&#8217;s lair and steal the shrink ray back.<\/p>\n<p>Gru&#8217;s\u00a0constant companions\u00a0are his nerdy scientist Dr. Nefario (Russell Brand), his disapproving\u00a0mom (performed deliciously by Julie Andrews), and a host of little yellow\u00a0minions who do his bidding.\u00a0 When the orphans (Margo, Edith and Agnes) move in with Gru, they take over his home and begin to work wonders\u00a0on his heart.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The girls beg Gru to take them to a local amusement park\u00a0where he is forced to ride the roller coaster and later defend their honor at a target practice game.\u00a0 At night they plead with Gru to read them a hopelessly\u00a0boring bedtime story until he agrees, and ultimately Gru warms up and begins to enjoy being a daddy.<\/p>\n<p>Although slow in the beginning,\u00a0with too much time spent\u00a0building the story\u00a0with the bank loan and at the orphanage, the film does eventually pick up and entertain.\u00a0\u00a0It is surprisingly funny with the usual juevenile gags, such as\u00a0when the minions are spotted making xerox copies of their behinds, but it&#8217;s\u00a0heartwarming as well.\u00a0 Gru&#8217;s character is\u00a0constantly trying to impress his equally cantankerous\u00a0mom, who looks the other way with\u00a0each of his\u00a0endeavors, until finally she informs Gru that she&#8217;s proud of him at the least expected moment.\u00a0 Overall a good kid flick with a catchy soundtrack by Pharrell Williams.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by Kathleen Amboy.\u00a0 Viewed at the Metro 4, Santa Barbara, CA. \u00a0 In an otherwise normal neighborhood, lives the cantankerous supervillain Gru (Steve Carell),\u00a0who&#8217;s been\u00a0upstaged by his punk nemesis Vector (Jason Segel),\u00a0who recently\u00a0heisted the\u00a0Great Pyramid.\u00a0 Gru sets his sights much\u00a0higher and\u00a0shoots for the Moon in Universal\u00a0Pictures&#8217;\u00a0 Despicable Me.
