{"id":999,"date":"2008-11-09T23:34:28","date_gmt":"2008-11-10T06:34:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=999"},"modified":"2008-11-09T23:39:07","modified_gmt":"2008-11-10T06:39:07","slug":"prodigal-sons-kimberly-reed2008","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentfilmreviews.org\/?p=999","title":{"rendered":"Prodigal Sons (Kimberly Reed, 2008): USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by David Smith. \u00a0Viewed at the Arclight theater, AFI Film Festival, Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; float: left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.prodigalsonsfilm.com\/images\/description.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"229\" height=\"213\" \/>Being a native Californian I would expect a documentary like <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1295068\/\" target=\"_blank\">Prodigal Sons<\/a><\/em> to be in the weekly cable TV line up. \u00a0Seeing as this story is based on a family from Montana my perception of the midwest has been broadened. \u00a0I here about peoples lives all the time but its usually people from southern California, this of course means anything goes. \u00a0My viewing of this film at the AFI Film Festival followed by a Q and A by most of the cast was quite an experience strictly due to its origin.<\/p>\n<p>The director of the film Kimbery Reed tells a compelling life story of her own struggles as a transgender. \u00a0She works as a\u00a0commercial\u00a0editor and directed and produced travel documentaries. \u00a0This is her first full length feature documentary.<\/p>\n<p>In the first twenty minutes she talks about how the relationship between her and adopted brother(Marc) would probably never be able to\u00a0reconcile there differences. \u00a0One of these\u00a0obstacles is the fact that she used to be a male. \u00a0Marc is the macho type of guy who wanted to be a joc but after a car accident wasn&#8217;t able to achieve doing. \u00a0Paul(kimberly) on the other hand was the high school quarterback who everyone adored. \u00a0Kimberly returns back home to Montana after several years of living in New York. \u00a0She is going to attend her high school reunion and try once more to hang out with Marc. \u00a0Everything seems to be OK while traveling back to their childhood home from the airport. \u00a0The Mother, Kimberly, Marc, and one of Kimberly&#8217;s girlfriends all meet up and then Marc starts up. \u00a0He is very self\u00a0conscious\u00a0that he wasn&#8217;t man enough as a teenager. \u00a0So he justifies it by bagging on kimberly for her gender preferences. \u00a0This goes on \u00a0and when Marc runs out of fuel he throws the fact that his other brother is gay. \u00a0Marc is\u00a0severely\u00a0ill and gets very violent. \u00a0This would seem to be the main conflict of the story but my opinion is that Kimberly&#8217;s coming out in the open with her\u00a0transsexuality and blaming Marc for not being able to accept it is the true conflict.<\/p>\n<p>The cinematography is done by John Keitel, and Kimberly Reed. \u00a0The camera shots are very informative in that the people speaking are always in view. \u00a0For a spare of the moment documentary, especially one with someone who can go off like Marc, this I&#8217;m sue was difficult. \u00a0I would suggest watching this film for the interesting content, and brutal honesty.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewed by David Smith. \u00a0Viewed at the Arclight theater, AFI Film Festival, Hollywood.
