   I loved Rachel Winter’s shout-out to UCSB! made me feel like I can make it, even if I don’t go to UCSB, but whatever, we get cross-pollination from their teachers coming to City College.

   Yes, seeing women have that much power was encouraging, but not just to women, to any other minorities that are not white men. Have you read the book “The End of Men” ? – if not, you should do.

   Obamas line in his speech about the much cited statistic that women earn 77 cents for every dollar a man makes in the workplace, I was thinking off throughout this panel.

   True. Since you have to spend so much time on these films (20 years!) you must feel passionate about the story you want to tell and the characters must connect with you.

   The importance of being given “breaks” by higher up patrons, cannot be understated, you are right.
2. Ricardo Soto 03.16.14 / 9pm

   I am glad you found the Women’s Panel to be inspirational. This panel and your review reminded me of The Hollywood Reporter article focus on women in film. I have seen two articles within The Hollywood Reporter that focuses on women in film. One article was focused on Showrunners or producers in television and many were women. Another article had a panel of agents from well-known talent agencies. Your panel sounds interesting with following your intuition, being passionate, and taking rejection as you strive to make it to the top. You captured the passion, and the knowledge to succeed in film. Well done.

   This is an excellent topic to be discussed. I feel this gives women all over the world encouragement to accomplish their goal in the film industry. These tips are great for women who are extremely motivated to make it to the top. I feel Lauren Macmullan should be looked up to for her accomplishment and I’m sure that took a lot of hard work. In this article, it is assured to women that their will always be more let downs until you get your big break in this career. I completely agree with everything being said and that this can only truly be successful if it fits your interest.

   I’m very late to this discussion and didn’t have the opportunity to see this panel but I think it’s great that the SBFF acknowledges and encourages the discussion of women’s careers in the film industry. I really like that the panelists discussed being true to yourself and your passions, because more than anything that is what will drive you to accomplish your goals. I’ve always considered myself to be someone who had an idea of what they wanted to do and to see women who are succeeding in the same line of work is inspiring. I also appreciate that there is an emphasis on communication and teamwork. While I do need to work on projects alone I am nothing without the advice and discussion of my peers who I can bounce ideas off of. In film, there is almost never someone who creates an entire production by themselves. I think it’s somewhat of a shame how the production crew of movies often go ignored and unrecognized for their contribution to a film, because it is all a huge collaboration of both men and women.
5. Lauren Koelsch 10.17.14 / 8pm

   It is very encouraging to hear about women in the industry making it to the top. It is not one that you often hear about being male dominate but when you think about it, it truly is. I feel like it would be very easy for women to get picked on for being bossy or emotional when trying to direct but if it were a male it would be seen as assertive. I think the concept of mentoring each other is fantastic and not only a good thing for women who are trying to be successful in their careers, but for women at all stages of life.
