The Westsiders (Josh Pomer, 2010): USA

Reviewed by Rhys Davis. Viewed at the Arlington Theater, SBIFF 2011.

The Westsiders, directed by Josh Pomer, was a great true story film about a local gang of surfers on the westside of Santa Cruz that rose to the top of the surfing world in the 90’s, but some paid the price of success. This film chronicles there childhood, rise to fame, falling out, and finally personal redemption.

Darryl Virostko, Shawn Barron, Jason Collins, and their mentor Vince Collier share their stories, and all had their fair share with personal misfortunes and problems, but in the end they all seem to have reached the other side of the dark times. I recommend this film, it is a great film, and the story is told in an entertaining and insightful way.

I made this clip from the screening of the film at the Arlington Theater. I included some shots of live music they were playing on stage before the screening, and also the Q&A with director Josh Pomer after the film.
