Storm Surfers 3D (Justin McMillan, Chris Nelius 2012:) Austraila
Review by Linda Mccomb Viewed at The Arlington Theater
Storm Surfers 3D is a documentary about surf legends Tom Carroll and Ross Clark Jones. Both surfers are middle aged and nearing their fifties, but rather than retire they decide to continue to surf the most dangerous surf spots in the world.
The movie documents these two surfer’s journeys to find new spots to surf and conquer waves that most would not dare go near. The beginning of the movie explains that Tom and Ross are surfing an unknown area 75 kilometers off the shores of Australia. No one has ever surfed this area before and there is nothing known about the area at all.
This film is a great mix of action surfing and adventure seeking. It also shows the friendship these two have and the love and passion for the sport that they have in common. The cinematography was very good and I liked some of the 3d effects. I enjoyed the shots of the waves and the powerful stormy ocean of the southern hemisphere. It was interesting to see the director show them crash and wipe out as well as surfing monster waves.
I enjoyed this film because it was a nice mix of humor, action and fun. Tom and Ross are still young at heart and still physically strong enough to seek adventure in the sport that they both loved. I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes surfing as well as anyone who enjoys a lighthearted action film about friendship and fun.
