After Brave, Pixar’s version of a Disney princess film, I wasn’t on good terms with mouse club. And then Wreck-it Ralph arrived and I felt rejuvenated. This is Pixar-level quality from inside Disney itself. And there is not a single flaw in this movie. This might make the review a little gushy and boring but I don’t care, this movie is amazing.

The title character Ralph (John C. Reilly)is the Donkey Kong analog and hero of the tale. But he’s tired of always being the villain, so he ventures out of his game to collect himself a medal proving he is a hero. Of course it goes wrong and he ends up bringing a swarm of bugs into another game and has his medal stolen by Vanellope (Sarah Silverman). Fearing that their game might be unplugged, Fix-it Felix (Jack McBrayer)journeys out to find Ralph. He’s joined by Calhoun (Jane Lynch), a no nonsense marine sergeant whose game Ralph invaded to get his medal. Ralph ends up helping Vanellope to get his medal back and so she can finally win a race in her game and get the respect she craves. They form a great friendship and the most heartbreaking moment is when Ralph breaks her cart so she can’t race. I cant give too much of the story away, you have to see it yourself.

Wreck-it Ralph is an amazing piece of cinema. From the music to the characters to the world they inhabit, every bit is polished to it’s finest shine. The soundtrack is full of that classic 8 bit style and it wouldn’t have worked with anything else. Theres even a bit of dubstep when Ralph travels to Hero’s Duty, and a little cameo of Skrillex at Felix’s apartment, bringing together the present and past. One of the best little quirks is how they animate some of the characters. Even in cg, certain characters like the bar man move like they would if they were pixels.

This movie has been described (mostly by me)as “Toy Story in video games,” and that is the best 5 word description of any movie ever. And it is, but with its own message and original characters. I don’t have much to say that hasn’t already been said by other people. Its an amazing movie that everyone needs to see. If you aren’t patient enough for dvd, look for it online, just watch it.
