Mustang (Deniz Gamze Ergüven, 2015) Turkey | France | Qatar | Germany
This is a story of 5 Turkish sisters and their struggle to womanhood. The turkish oppression of young women is revealed through the childhood of these young stars. The sisters share a bond that holds them together as one, while their grandmother is desperately trying to make these young girls into married women.
In the beginning the young girls are playing with boys on the beach and are accused of being whores because of taking part in water games involving their genitals touching the boy’s neck. The girls were clearly enjoying themselves in a respectable manner however in Turkey for women, looks are deceiving to others. It is this stereotype that influences these youngwomen to grow up and live how they desire. A highly recommended film that opens people up to real life situations.
