1778 Stories of Me and My Wife(Mamoru Hoshi, 2011):Japan
Reviewed by Cody Christianson. Viewed at the Lobero Theater in Santa Barbara.

1778 Stories of Me and My Wife is a drama film that was sad; there were many people in the theater crying and blowing their noses! This film was made in Japan and is spoken in Japanese, with English subtitles. The director Mamoru Hoshi did an alright job directing this film.
“1778 Stories of Me and My Wife” was based off the book written by Taku Maymura. The two main characters in this film are Sakutaro, who is played by Tyuyoshi Kusanagi, and Setsuko, who is played by Yuko Takeuchi. Sakutaro is an outgoing Science Fiction writer and Setsuko is Sakutaro’s loving wife. The setting of this film is somewhere in modern day Japan. Sakutaro and Setsuko find out that Setsuko has very bad colon cancer that is spreading. When asked, Sakutaro lies to Setsuko and tells her that she is going to make a full recovery, but the doctor really said she’s only got, at best, one year to live. As they’re leaving the Hospital, the Doctor tells them, “Laughter is the best medicine.” With that in mind, Sakutaro expresses his idea to Setsuko. his idea is to write one short comedy a day, which is only to be read by Setsuko and himself.
The moral of the story was definitely ‘love’. This is the moral because he clearly loves her, as he writes a story a day just to help her get better.
The Direction and Acting was done very well, I really liked the use of the camera and the acting because of camera angles gave their acting more emotion. The plot and setting was wonderful as well. They lived in a beautiful house, in a beautiful neighborhood. I liked the plot because It was sad, as many people were crying. My overall opinion was that it was good.
