“How to Train Your Dragon” is the latest computer animated film from the DreamWorks animation studio. The film was released back in spring of 2010 which I unfortunately never saw so I was happy  learn that the film was being screened at the film festival. I had heard that this film was very good and I did read several good reviews from critics so I was very much looking forward to seeing it. I’m happy to say that the film lived up to it’s hype and I had a great time watching it.

The film tells the story of Hiccup, a young viking who hopes to fight against the dragons who harm his village but his father and leader of the village refuses to let him do so. One day Hiccup ventures out on his own to fight Dragons. Hiccup manages find a dragon but he can’t bare to kill it. Hiccup ends up befriending the dragon instead and calls him Toothless. Together they both try to convince the Vikings to form a friendship with the dragons.

This is a terrific film that is spectacular to look at on the big screen. The animation is very well done in the film which makes all of the landscapes and fight scenes look better than most other animated films. The character voices which in include Jay Baruchel and Gerard Butler are nothing really special but it doesn’t matter because watching the film is a spectacular experience. Some critics have said that the 3D sequences involving flying have surpassed “Avatar”, now although I would not go that far into saying that  those scenes are still very impressiveand gives you a great feeling of adrenaline.

Aside from all of the visuals the reason why this movie works so well is because of the story and it’s strong characters. The relationship between Hiccup and Toothless  is very strong and in the end I cared about both them and wanted them to be successful.

Unlike most of the DreamWorks Animated  films “How to Train Your Dragon” is a film that is well made and entertaining. Over the years I have become bored by the DreamWorks  Films and it’s cheap humor so I didn’t have any high expectations. I was very surpirsed by how much I enjoyed this film and I can only hope that Dreamworks makes more films like this in the future. Already there planning to make a sequel to this film but lets just hope this franchise doesn’t over stay it’s welcome like those “Shrek” films.
