Whore’s Glory (Michael Glawogger, 2011): Germany, Austria
Reviewed by Tyler Rowland. Viewed at Santa Barbara Film Festival 2012.
The worlds oldest profession.
Delivered here in all of the Whore’s Glory.
Delving into the lives of prostitutes from around the globe.
Bangkok, Thailand-
A group of women stand on one side of the glass, men on the other.
The safe confines indoor.
Sensual reds.
Wealthy men are there “buying a little happiness”.
Soothing blues.
Near destitute women are in attendance because “a job is a job”.
Returning customers remember the girls they like.
What number would you like, sir?
20, 38, and 280. “Any more?” Yes, 214.
One, two, and three are not enough.
Cash or credit sir?
Put it on my account, my card is good for it.
Faridpur, Bangladesh-
Brothels set this scene.
Sweeping the walkway.
A cleansing ritual
A mother whores her child.
A prostitute prays for daily customers to show.
A man with one leg, an old man, a midget.
Acts of the educated and uneducated alike.
All venues to seek out women for hire.
Here in “The City of Joy”
Pevnose, Mexico-
Streets, sidewalks, and alleyways offer little protection.
“What is your name?”
“No names, do you have money?”
“Balls like church bells”.
It is Christmas Eve.
Just another day.
Music makes this culturally accepted behavior seem almost appropriate.
Sensual reds now seem evil
Soothing blues now cold.
Though much of the outside world looks down upon this lifestyle,
what is the world doing to stop this?
Spreading awareness helps to a small extent.
The lack of disproval only encourages these behaviors.
