The Samaritan(David Weaver, 2012): US
Reviwed by Nathan Chinchilla at the Metro Theater, Santa Barabra
The Samaritan may come off as another crime-gritty movie with an awesome lead role from Samuel L. Jackson and that’s exactly what this movie is and more. A movie that includes Samuel L. Jackson already gives me a certain view of how I expect this movie to be about and this time wth director, David Weaver, he has gone beyond my expectations like always. His role of being the most notorious “gangster” and doing what he wants has certaintly played to his advantage in this film because Samuel L. Jackson has dipped in this character that has the audience in amazement of how well he portrays the role of Foley.
The movie begins with a Foley, Samuel L, Jackson, in his natural “role” environment of being the scandalous one to be holding the gun to someones head he is about to shoot and doing it in his own style. The movie then jumps to twenty years later and Foley is in jail about to be released for a murder that he committed. Foley then plans to return to his old hometown and start his life over again without any of his demons from his past follow him. He quickly discovers that everyone he worked with before is dead, jail, or nearly-dead. He decided he wants to live a calm life without any pressures or anything but discovers its not possible when the son of the man he killed has returned to ask him to work together and plan another “grift”. He quickly refuses but after running into trouble, Foley recognizes that he do what he must to discover what has happens in the last twenty years and to have peaceful life without any vices.
The film has done great job especially with David Weaver directing with an awesome cast of Samuel L. Jackson and Tom Wilkinson included as well to make a film with such a twisted plot and story line along with it. They both collaborated very well and created a film that has set a personal bar for David Weaver in future projects. I recommend that when this movie is released that many go and enjoy to see another brilliant performance from Samuel . Jackson and the rest of the cast. For all you crime movie bluffs this is a movie you may want to see if you want something new that will keep you interested from beginning to end.
